Default ECT?

I've tried multiple medications and different therapies. I'm still like this. Nothing works.

My T wants me to consider ECT. The idea scares me a bit, but more than anything I don't want to get my hopes up and then shut down. It happens every time.

He also told me about a long-term IP program I would go to while undergoing the therapy. That doesn't sound like something I'm willing to do, either.

How many of you have undergone ECT? Did it help in the long-term or did the relief dissipate later on?

I have done ECT for the past 3 years and it has beed a true lifesaver. I have a treatment in the morning and am able to go back to work an hour after the treatment. To tell you the truth my suicidal thoughts are so strong I am afraid to go more than 2 weeks without having a treatment. The treatments are very easy, Im put to sleep and in amateur of minutes it is over. You really should consider it if your depression consists of suicidal thoughts, it really works. good luck to you.

I did several ECT treatments for a particularly bad depressive episode. It helped to pull me out of rock bottom and feeling like a human again. I disliked the memory-related side effects, and there are some memories I won't get back, but it was worth it to overcome the depressive episode. I would absolutely recommend it as a last resort treatment if meds and therapy are not helping enough.

You have been really suffering for a while now and you need a break
I urge you to consider ECT.

I've had ECT & will admit that it did not help me.
I started meds, many combinations, in 1990 & did ECT in 2002. Then more med combinations & more ECT in 2014. Looking back I cannot say that it helped, but that is just me & every person is different. I've read on here that it has helped many people.
So I would just say do your research into this procedure, extensive research, (not just the first page of a google search) before you decide.
Best of luck!

Thanks everyone. I'll do some more research on it and allow myself to truly consider it.

The integrity of my mental function is all I have in the world. To intentionally damage that on the "chance" it may help alleviate pain makes no sense for me. I would rather die.

Well that was my choice and I'm glad I chose ECT, it is the only way I'm still alive.

I had 6 treatments over a few weeks. Yes the loss of memory was a side effect but one I could live with. I had very good success with the treatmenst. In fact I was "in remission" for 7 years after tratment and was just on a maintenance dose of meds. Unfortunately I'm recently out of remission and starting a new course of medication. Stay tuned.
