Default My Mom Is Too Overprotective

I'm 14 and my mom won't let me leave the house by myself. We don't even live in a bad neighborhood. She's worried I'll get kidnapped. It seems like she's getting more strict as I get older. I've been going through a depressive episode and I like to be alone. But I want to go to the park and be outside. I feel trapped in my house and it's like I have no freedom. I just don't see why she's so protective. I'm smart and I'm not asking to go out after dark. The park is only two blocks from my house and I have a cellphone.

Hello PurpleFinch: Since this is the Teens' Lounge, I'm not supposed to be here. (I'm old!) But I noticed this is your first post here on PC. So... to PsychCentral… from the Skeezyks! May the time you spend here be of benefit.

Default Re: My Mom Is Too Overprotective

Your also in the same state that I'm from! Props to that.
Anyway, It sounds like you need to sit down and talk to her. One possibility is that she just wants to spend time with you and worries. Or this might also stem from a traumatic experience that she had during her childhood. I would gently ask her if something happened, and explain your feelings on her over protectiveness.
