Oh, I hear you. My electric bill this month is going to be atrocious. What part of the country are you in, having fires?

Yeahhhh. Power bill. I dread it. I live in the SE, so it's hot and humid. At least there are no fires. Ugggh. I'm a "winter" person.

i could have sworn i wrote out a long reply to your question, Laurie, and added a pic~~!

here goes again....
i live in the southwest, near the continental divide. we are in the midst of a 25 yr drought, the worst on record in over 200 yrs, and no end in sight. the little bushes and sage are like tender, and at higher elevations there are huge swaths of dead pine and other conifer trees standing dead (for like 300 miles long and 5 miles wide). at this point we are only having brush fires, but they have remained out of control (not contained) for 2 weeks,, (about 80 miles west of me, UP WIND, that means they are being blown my way).

we have had a couple of fires whose smoke blew up the river valley and the highway rift, and made the town look like armegeddon. i'm on the edge of the San Juan National Forest,, if you can imagine how big that is,, they shut it down a couple of weeks ago, but the governor made them lift the restrictions because our main source of income is tourism........

Oh my gosh. Yes, the hot and dry conditions coupled with ongoing drought is the perfect recipe for wildfires. The enormous fire close to where I live (it's called the County fire) is at long last contained. The air is not hazy with smoke and ash has stopped falling. Nevertheless, the air is dirty, so hot, and very unpleasant. The heat is blistering now, with days on end of such heat predicted to continue.

Normally one wouldn't think 85F was hot but the 100% humidity makes it a killer. Every time I move sweat pours down my nose & can't see through the sweat on my glasses.

Winter heating here is so expensive so I try to avoide using my heat pump to cool in the summer. I have older dogs & I am trying to get my house organized for my trip & my friends who are coming in to take care of them. I have to use the AC just to get rid of the humidity so I can function. The humidity drains me so I can't get anything done. I will leave my AC on while I'm gone for my dogs to keep them comfortable.

Oh Gus.....Love that you are caring for your neighboring raccoons. I actually have woods on my farm & last year a skinny raccoon came up on my back deck looking for food....then came her 5 babies. The raccoons & possums now know where their soft heart is....mommy raccoon kept comming & this year brought only 3 babies. They just showed up eating solid food this last week. Yep, I open the sliding door while getting their dog food into their dishes & both mom & babies come in to impatiently wait for their food. The wildlife here really makes my days.

We don't have fires here like I grew up & lived with in So. Calif for 54 years but they do allow burning brush & grass fields. I still panic when fire is anywhere close to my farm & woods & I can't even tolerate the smell of smoke.

Went hiking in a nature preserve along the Ky River Last week. It was all down hill to the river & all uphill on the way back. It was a morning hike but we were all drenched by the time we got back up to the parking lot. Most of the women in this hiking group are 65+ years old.

Humidity is the most miserable type of weather I've ever experienced. It's sickening.

How fortunate, Gus. Oh, how I would love to see, hear, and feel rain...
