Default financial dependence

Maybe I am a cold-hearted beyotch, but I would never financially support anyone. Would you?

I could never depend on anyone financially either. I need my independence.

(I know, never say never.)

My money is my money. I work to take care of myself.

People with children: Teach them to be independent.

Am I cold and selfish?

I never financially supported anyone except my daughter when she was a child. I also was never dependent on anyone. I taught my daughter that it's very important to have a fulfilling career and do not ever depend on a man. My mother had a career and raised kids just fine, so did my grandmother and so did my great grandmother and great great grandmother. Further in generations I don't know

Now of course things happen. If my husband gets sick and legitimately cannot work, I wouldn't abandon him. But I'd never willingly settle for supporting someone from The get go.

No you aren't selfish

I don't care for such an attitude. To me, it's not only selfish, but it is self-destructive and shows a lack of life experience.

It's a nice idea in theory. Having said that, sometimes circumstances occur in life that are out of our control.

In a perfect world yes, what you say is true. We don't live in a perfect world however. Yes, I would support someone I love if the situation called for it. Yes, I have been supported in my own life. You never know what might happen to you to make you dependent or what could happen to someone you love to make you feel differently about supporting another. Kids can be born disabled so don't have them if you know you will never change your mind about supporting someone.

I would support someone I love or I thought was worthy. But I think people are "financially shamed" farrrrr too often in society and for the most part need to be less giving.
