Default Does Anyone Use a Dehydrator?

For fruits like bananas? I love banana chips but hate the price in the stores. Also, want to do roasted tomatoes. Anyone have experience and/or suggestions?

For roasted tomatoes, all you need is an oven. Here are a couple of recipes:

Great recipes Unguy! I'll have to try the one with the egg, that sounds like a nice change of pace.

I do the roasted tomatoes in the oven now but thought I could include them as an additional rack in the new dehydrator that I have. That way it would utilize that cooking source and eliminate the need to turn the oven on.

For my oven, I slice my tomatoes in 1/8 or 1/4"'s depending upon how juicy I want them, brush with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper & oregano on a non-stick baking sheet and pop them into a 400F oven, turn if off and go to bed. In the morning they are usually perfect!

I have used a dehydrator for a number of years. I will dry apples and occasionally pineapple. I have an apple tree but the crop varies from year to year. I have had some years where I had no apples. Occasionally I will go to a local produce stand on a Sunday and offer to buy their bruised apples. Depending upon the mood of the owner I have walked out with a half box of apples for $5-$10. I cut the apples into 1/8 inch slices. A batch of apples can take around 5 hours. When I have a good crop of apples I will dry 2 batches a day. Pineapple takes a bit longer. I have tried bananas and pears, but I always go back to apples. I have never tried any vegetables.

Besides apples I like making beef jerky. I usually use London broil. If I can get it at a good price I will buy at least 5 to 6 pounds. I have no recipe so the seasoning will change all of the time. My seasoning base starts with either red wine or balsamic vinegar. I cut the meat into 1/8 to 1/4 inch slices and marinade it overnight. A batch of beef jerky will also take around 5 hours. Because of the marinade the trays can get very messy.

Mangoes are really good in the dehydrator, IMO

I have one, but I am sad to say that I haven't used it, and I think I have had it for at least 3 to 4 years.
