Default Provigil?

Has anyone taken this? This must be the holy grail of all meds. It must cure everything you possibly have (Iím kind of being sarcastic) my brother tried getting it filled at the pharmacy and he would have had to pay $1,500 out of pocket. Thatís after insurance too. It must work really good to cost that much.

I seem to think I took it at one point--I've been on so many things. That high price doesn't make sense. Is there a generic or something?

I think he was trying to get the generic version. Heís on Medicare but also tried using a RX card. It looks like the place where he could get it for the least amount of money is Costco and thatís still over $500. Or $36 per pill. My brother has bad circadian rhythm sleep disorder along with severe OCD and Aspergers. His doctor was trying to use the provigil to help the sleep disorder.

I'm severely TRD and have responded intermittently to it. It's too unreliable to be a "go to" or foundational med for me. Several others online I've chatted with have experienced the same thing.
Same goes for it's offspring Nuvigil.

Sometimes Nuvigil is cheaper. I know that was true when Nuvigil was new; they wanted to sell it so they made provigil much more expensive than Nuvigil and it sounds like that may still be true as 10 years ago I paid out of pocket for Nuvigil and it was about $400/month I think.

There is a patient assistance program that may help him get access to Nuvigil (provigil is generic so it won't have patient assistance anymore). If he could get a script for that the application is on the website. It will say he doesn't qualify because he has insurance (Medicare) but they will grant exemptions if it is still too expensive/income too low for the copay. I've gotten a number of meds this way, including Nuvigil. I just include a note with the application explaining I can't afford the copay and they approve it. With Nuvigil they may be picky about what the diagnosis is, not sure about that.

I would have him try again with costco but have them run it as "cash pay" Believe it or not, there are some meds that are cheaper to buy WITHOUT insurance. It's sickening that it's even legal , but it's the truth. I've taken it before, and I wouldn't call it a holy grail of meds. It's used for a couple fairly specific purposes. But it did pretty much save my life, or at least my job, until I was able to get surgery to help my sleep disorder. It's filthy greed that makes it so expensive

Yeah something got messed up. With the rx card it was $1500. With just his insurance it was about $150 a month. Plus it might be less after the first month because he hasnít met his deductible yet.

The $1500 made no sense.

Modafinil(provigil) and Nuvigil are very similar. The difference is that Nuvigil is missing an insomer that provigil has so its sort of like half-provigil. My husband used to take it for narcolepsy. They used to recommend it for adhd but then the company was sued after 1 person(child ) died of something called Stevenson Johnson syndrome-accept that was debunked years ago but they were hurt enough not to allow anymore off label recommendations. There are some promising studies being done on the use of provigil as an off label antidepressant for people that have treatment resistant depressions and some really promising studies on the use of provigil in the treatment of Parkinsons and Alzheimers.

It finally got straightened out. He will be getting it tomorrow. According to the insurance company the first month will cost him $170. The second month either $160 or $140 and after that it will be $60 a month. Walmart just wasnít putting it through insurance. I hope it helps him. If it can cost up to $1500 youíd think it would work pretty good.
