Sometimes medications can help with symptoms, but personality disorders respond best to therapy. It's hard work, but you can beat it. I have avoidant personality disorder too.

Ok som here's the thing. I am 55, retired from the AF in 1990, worked again, retired again. Now during all this I have anxiety (panic attack) disorders, ADD, a little OCD, and depresssion? I guess my question is outside of the anxiety, which I can feel, and quiet down with meds, I don't really feel depressed. I am mad at myself from divorcing my first wife to marry an old sweetheart. (I was married 29 years), I have been remarried for 5. I always wanted to divorce my lst, and now I am questioning #2. I am scared to death of leaving but I really do want peace., no anxiety I really question the ADD., I am really going off the deep end or have I reached the end and am starting out?

Sloviak44,

Welcome to PC! I just noticed that you hadn't gotten any replies yet to your question. You are more likely to get replies if you start your own thread. If you like, I can move your post and make a new thread out of it. Just let me know, ok?

My father retired from the AF too, so I'm familiar with the lifestyle.

Have you had any therapy for your anxiety and depression, etc.? What you describe sounds like a lot of stress, which therapy might help you with, and it sounds like you have some confusion about what you want to do with your life. It doesn't sound like "going off the deep end" to me. More like you are looking for some direction and maybe a little confused.

I just read a book about relationships and advice and how we make decisions, etc. The title is "Should You Leave?" by Peter D. Kramer. It's really a lot more than you might think from the title, almost written like a novel. I learned a lot from it, about all the things that come into play when we make decisions or give advice. It also helped me to understand my relationships better. It sounds like something you might get something out of.

Hi,
I have just been diagnosed after about 20 years with Dependent, Avoindant personality with a bit of perfectionist thrown in. Although happy with diagnoses, now need to learn more about it. Any suggestions and also what types of meds are used would be very helpful. Thanks

Meds are generally not particularly useful for personality disorders themselves, but might help if you have symptoms like depression or anxiety. If you are perfectionistic, it is likely that you have some anxiety. You will need to talk to your doctor if you are interested in meds. I would suggest writing down the specific symptoms that you would like help with. For some of them, CBT or some other talk therapy will probably help more than meds will. If you click the "Disorder" and "Resources" tabs, you can probably find more specific treatment ideas for your specific symptoms and disorders.

Welcome to PC, Robert. That would be a tough combination to deal with (I have some of the same stuff too). How much do you feel that the anxiety and depression are related to your personality disorder?
