Default Help, we are at the end of our rope

My child has ADHD, had low frequency hearing loss (it resolved itself, but she still struggles with /f/ /th/ /v/ sounds, she also has been labeled “at risk” for a language based learning disability. It might also be important to know that she was also identified as “gifted” in spacial-visual problem solving. Her IEP is under review and she is going to lose her biggest advocate, her hearing teacher. It is the one-on-one help that is keeping my child -almost- on grade level in reading. The Sp Ed teacher doesn’t have the rescources to maintain that kind of plan. Every single professional we have encountered has noted that is it obvious when talking to my child that she has a processing disorder, but has passed every single test. Audiogical, and verbal/speech processing test have been passed and resulted in “at risk” labels because they can’t pinpoint the problem.

Am I missing an area of testing? Is there another avenue I can explore? Her biggest obstacles are expressive language (she sounds very rude, even though she is simply stating facts) and reading (she decodes EVERY WORD in the 3rd grade) c/a/t d/o/g
. She knows the words and can decode really hard words, but it takes her forever. I am a teacher at her school and can see that her language is effecting her relationships. What else should I be looking for?

Does she go to speech therapy and/or had speech evaluation? Would possibly getting IQ evaluation or neuropsychological evaluation which could look at learning and memory and do more thorough evaluation of learning abilities be possible? Is hearing limited and does that affect speaking ability? Good luck and hope it works out for you and your child.

Also maybe speech therapy that could help with how to speak to not sound rude may help.

Hello Mrstimmarie: I noticed this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral.

I cannot be of any help with this. But it occurred to me one potential resource that may be helpful is the PACER Center in Minneapolis. Here's a link to their website:

PACER Center - Champions for Children with Disabilities

If they can't be of help themselves, perhaps they know who can.

My best wishes to you & your daughter.

the de coding every word is a learned behavior. my daughter does the same thing. She was taught to read phonetically (sounding out words) instead of sight wording (recognizing whole words in sentences)

what my daughters teachers, my wife and I are doing is sitting down every night with the children and read to them. we started out with simple books like the cat and the hat. we follow each word with our fingers so that my daughter can see the whole word as we say the whole word with out sounding each letter out. the way with our reading..........to her......... she gets to see and hear how reading is actually done by words not individual letters now that she is older. after reading the book through to her for a week we had her read the same book back to us, doing the same thing having her finger follow the words she is saying. eventually we will move into reading with out the finger following by using a piece of paper showing each line.

in other words we are teaching her sight word reading now that she knows how to sound out words.
