Default Having a Learning Disability

I have a learning disability. I have had it since I was really young. Growing up, I was bullied for it by my classmates. I learned to tune them out. However, these past few days, my family members have been making fun of me for my not understanding something. I cannot help that my learning disability causes me to not register (process) the majority of words. It depends on words people use, and how they word things. I feel as if my family is being disrespectful to me, and that they all expect me to have the exact same smart brains they all have. Well, I don't. And I never want to because they are mean to me. They are not nice. They yell at me to shut up when I talk, because they do not like it when I talk. It hurts. I feel bullied.

I am sorry, it's always such a challenge when someone struggles and is trying so very hard and others fault them instead of being more supportive and empathetic.

Yes, it is. I am even having issues in my 3 college classes. I am supposed to graduate really soon, but i am worried about where i stand with that now because of my classes. My professor's are making it tough. I know I should use my academic accommodations but I want to prove to myself that i can pass these class without having to use them. And it upsets me that people do not understand why. Being able to pass a class without accommodations helps boost my self confidence and self esteem and it helps me to realize that i am just as smart and capable as others.

Good Luck Avlady, be gentle with yourself, we learn by doing so allow yourself time to practice.

If you need the accommodations than it's really ok to utilize them. It's doesn't mean you are not good enough at all, you simply learn differently then is expected. It's not much different than if you needed glasses and decided that you should be able to read without them.

Milo, I was always told I was the dumb one in the family so I know how u feel when your family makes fun of you. I could not comprehend the same way they did.

It actually took me until I was 50 to realize I was not dumb but I had a learning disability.

I know if I had the resources to help me learn I would definitely take advantage of them, as you should. That is what they are there for.

If anything you are smart enough to know you need the help. Can you look at it, as a blessing?
