Default Having a Learning Disability

I have a learning disability. I have had it since I was really young. Growing up, I was bullied for it by my classmates. I learned to tune them out. However, these past few days, my family members have been making fun of me for my not understanding something. I cannot help that my learning disability causes me to not register (process) the majority of words. It depends on words people use, and how they word things. I feel as if my family is being disrespectful to me, and that they all expect me to have the exact same smart brains they all have. Well, I don't. And I never want to because they are mean to me. They are not nice. They yell at me to shut up when I talk, because they do not like it when I talk. It hurts. I feel bullied.

In cultivating compassion we draw from the wholeness of our experience—our suffering, our empathy, as well as our cruelty and terror. It has to be this way. Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity. Pema Chödrön- The Places That Scare You
