I am too overwhelmed by life to work enough to support myself and I do not qualify for SSI (probably because my car loan). Does anyone know if I could be awarded additional assistance (food stamps, housing assistance, emergency?) and/or what more I could apply for? When I went to ask for housing assistance, they gave me a list of places I can't afford in neighborhoods I am unfamiliar with. I am not interested in moving, but I can no longer make all of my payments and afford to eat. Somewhat panicked but mostly thinking about my future. Anyone have suggestions for me?
Go to your Income Support office and simply apply for Food Stamps (the official name us "SNAP" - Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.) Anyone can put in an application for this benefit. Apply and see what answer you get.

Some people who get food stamps only get $25/month from SNAP. I've heard people say they wouldn't bother for that small an amount. That's dumb thinking. Even at that low monthly amount, it comes out to $300 per year that is as good as cash.

Consider just defaulting on some of your "bills." It depends on what kind of bills these are. If you're using credit cards, STOP.

At the housing authority, tell them you want to apply for a Section 8 Choice Voucher. You might be on a waiting list for a few years, but you've got nothing to lose by getting on that list.

Thank you for replying to my post. Yes, I am on section 8 lists, and was able to find a temporary place to live with a reduced rent agreement. My concern is that since I have moved (not far from where I was living) my disability benefits will be re-evaluated and I honestly am not sure how to report this or if I need to. I want to apply for SNAP benefits since for the first time in over ten years I have been unable to pay all of my bills on time. I have completely neglected one and my credit has declined I am also very nervous that when I am re-evaluated for benefits, they will determine I am better off homeless or whatever and no-one will care to help me.

Also, this year I have applied for a care card, which is potentially useful because the card can only be used at doctor's offices and for medical purposes. My limit is fairly high but finding qualified doctors to see me is difficult. Even in finding them, I am hesitant to spend money I know I may be unable to pay back. I am basically only going in for routine checks, and family therapy.

Seems as if everything has turned out alright for you this go round, however, in the future should anything like this happen again ...

Several years ago when my insurance coverage came to an end, I went through my local county's Behavioral Health Center.

I was able to do individual & group therapies for $5.00 a pop, and my meds were also only $5.00 a pop.

Again, not the best solution because it sucks to lose our "known" healthcare providers, however, it is better than absolutely nothing at all.

Wishing you the best as all this is totally overwhelming & stressful for those of us that struggle with mental health issues!

I did not lose my SSI. I just wonít be paid for that particular month if I made too much the month before.

My plan though is to tell work to cut my hours. I just need to tell them to cut my hours from 29 to about 22-25 a week. I cannot work full time or a second job with my anxiety. My anxiety is the reason my Medicare was renewed in the first place.
