Default Going to the ER / Anxiety

Hi all.

I have this question; when is it at the point where going to the ER for an anxiety/panic episode is warranted? I know that if I feel bad enough, then it is obviously a good idea, but I mean in terms of bad enough that the staff will take it seriously?

I know the level of depression that means I should go to the ER, but what about anxiety?
I had an episode last week in which I was anxious to the point of my reasoning being extremely impaired, you know? Sort of a point of no return in which not much would be able to calm down.

I assume you'd go to the ER and they'd give you an injection to calm you down.

I would not go to the DR for anxiety no matter how bad. I would definitely call my psychiatrist. You will sit and wait at the ER for hours because it won't be a priority.

TicTac, hope your anxiety is better. Ask your psychiatrist for rescue benzo. It's way cheaper than the ER.

Going to the ER for anxiety is more likely to make things worse. I calm down better in my own space. Talk to your p'doc about options for you.

I would definitely ask for a PRN.

Here the hospital protocol is 2mg of Ativan and then send you home. A PRN would be much cheaper.

Effexor is a good choice for treatment resistant depression, but definitely not a gold standard for anxiety....in fact it can make anxiety worse. I take a non-clinical dose now, 37.5mg
