My Mood: Desperate mom!!

Default Desperate mom!!

My 5 year old has been having episodes for the past few weeks. She will fall asleep and within 5 min will start screaming crying and throwing things. Then it just keeps happening. I honestly don't think she is awake. Even though her eyes are open. She starts throwing any and everything and just screaming. She yells that her mouth is hurting ( but it never hurts when shes awake).
I need help and patience dealing with it.

Welcome to Psych Central (PC) Tammy. Sorry to hear your daughter has been suffering from nighmares. Some people at PC will find a therapist that specializes in children to help them sort out what may be troubling your child.

Getting sleep may be the single one thing that keeps me in balance. If you or your chlid are not sleeping or having bad side affects, contact your doctor or psychiatrist and tell him what is happening so you can make adjustments.

Many people find compassionate, caring people here at PC. Some people find the forums give them the compassion and empathy they seek. http://forums.psychcentral.com

There are articles at PC that go into more detail about coping with nightmares in children

This might not be a nightmare, also look into night terrors.

Sounds like night terrors, and she is the right age for them. You should mention this to your doctor.

Would night terrors start right immediately after she falls asleep though?

I would definitely call her doctor and then your doctor if you need help with the anxiety it is causing you as well. Her meds might be causing this. One keeps her focused and awake and the other one counteracts to slow her down. It is being used off label to help her come down from the Ritalin. I am on Ritalin as well. Best of luck.

Welcome to PC.

How soon before bedtime are you giving her the Clonidine? Maybe adjusting time could help her body adjust, since it's technically not a sleep aid.

Eyes wide open, just five minutes?? One of the two meds is shown to have a side effect of aggression, hence, the importance of speaking with her physician.

As far as patience, are you utilizing your own individual therapy and making sure, that you take time to focus on yourself? Being a caregiver is draining welcome to PC

Hi! Sorry i didnt think they were posting!!
Its not every night. But the way she cries about her mouth hurting seems so real. I give her the meds about an hour before. And just wait till i see her getting tired.
Yes, eyes are wide open. Throwing everything. Last night i got the remote between the eyes! Then she lies down closes her eyes and back out. Sometimes it happens every 1/2 hour til 1 or so. And starts like 5 minutes after she falls asleep.
She has never slept thru the night. She still sleeps with me.
I went thru similar things with my now 18 year old. Same type of meds, with a mood stabilizer too though. But these night terrors are new for me!!
Yes i have my own therapist. And am blessed with awesome caring friends that listen anytime i need them.

Thanks so much.
