Default New Habit: Exercise and weight lifting

So I finally did it. I ordered the "total gym" for my basement. Back in 2017 I actually refurbished my basement with the idea that I would immediately make it a gym but it has been difficult.

I am ashamed to admit this but I have held off because the gym will come to my door but I am unsure if I can get it into my house. Also, I don't want this to happen.... everyone sees that I am struggling with it and they try to help me get it in. IMHO that is so embarrassing.

I had considered hiring someone to do this but I couldn't see a way to get it to their door and get them over to my house without an even bigger issue. I might pay someone to assemble it if it is difficult.

So my boss is off this entire week and I think it will arrive someplace around Thursday. Whatever day it is supposed to come I will take off and struggle with it when no one is home.

I decided I have to do weight lifting. I have tried it at the gym but it never really stuck. I think there are a few problems

1. embarrassment
2. weight machines are always in use
3. getting to the gym
4. At the gym I lose about 30 minutes of my time in travel to and from.

I have decided that gaining muscle is the MOST important thing as I get older. First, doing that should help me to avoid falling and instability. And I feel like I have an anemic metabolism. To me that is a sign I need to lift weights.

I am hoping I can make this a weekend habit at least. 3 x per week. I now may order a tv for down there.

good luck.

I have to say, (though I'm not much of an exerciser),

lifting weights while watching music videos seems a good idea

Thanks. Somewhat recently BMI calculators have changed so you can get a more accurate number if you have your fat %. Well I do, my workplace had it done. And I discovered that I can burn up to 200 calories more per day but reducing my fat percentage by just 10%. (presumably increasing my muscle).

That was amazing to me.

I just hope I can stick to it.

I was inspired by watching a movie. Basically the movie has someone struggling with something about his body and has been doing so for years and never was able to get it.. then after years he tried one more thing and did it.

I kind of see how that I give up too easily. So I have decided just to build muscle for 6 months no matter what.

Apparently I can gain 3 lbs of muscle which (low estimate) will burn off 12 more calories every hour. And 12 x 24 is almost 300 more calories burned per day. That is massive.

I know I am weak. Whenever I try something like doing manual labor I am always in severe pain. So I think I reasonably could build muscle.

So I had the "total gym" arrive yesterday. I ordered the one that was 56 lbs which I thought I could handle but UPS said it was 74 lbs. So I had to stay home from work to be available for the UPS guy to bring it in the house. The ups guy brought it into the house and from there I took out of the packaging and got it down to my basement. I have assembled some of it but still have some to do. Very excited with myself because i had put this off so much for fear I wouldn't be able to get the equipment down there and or assemble it.

I have a tv down there but I think I will buy a new one. It isn't really large enough to see DVD's etc well.

Trying not to get discouraged already.

I had a slow day yesterday at work and decided to do some googling. A large mistake. And when I first looked into it -- it said that each lb of muscle burns more calories than fat. 6 calories per hour. I thought that was too high so I put it at 4 calories per hour. For a total of 96 for each lb. Assuming 3 lbs of muscle over time, I would be burning like 200 more calories. Unfortunately there are several studies that say that isn't true. But here is the thing, they say that it is 8 or 9 calories per day. That makes zero sense. And I think that has to be too low. Finally eventually I went to Pub Med and they had several studies that showed an increase in BMR of 7% in men after 13 weeks of weight lifting. Then there are those that say that the increased calorie burn of weight lifting is the energy you use lifting weights no increase in BMR. Then I found another study that said they found increases in muscle mass that you don't already have, non skeletal muscle, is more metabolically active.

So I am confused.

Then months ago I sent away for this kit to test my stomach bacteria. The current science is that fat is gained in the gut. If you have bacteria that is more efficient than other bacteria, it will extract more energy from your food. So you could eat 400 calories of something and get 450. So after four months I finally got my results.. they were useless. It says that my biome is "metabolically active" and that you want that to be high. Which mine is. But there is no explanation for what that means at all. Because if it is, what I think it is, that my gut bacteria is super good at extracting nutrients and energy from food, then that is actually bad... and perhaps a reason why calorie counts never seem to be right for me.

All the other information is useless as well. It says that I have low inflammation in the stomach -- good but then it goes on about how that isn't really a useful marker of anything and then, it says I don't have a ton of strains of bacteria. But then, after googling other people's results it seems NO ONE DOES... and perhaps the only people who would are people who eat food directly from outside.

Finally I came home and did my exercise and promptly kind of hurt my back.
