Smile Re: Welcome to the Getting Off of Meds forum

Hi! I just joined this site... I need to vent so bear with me... I am so sick of being on all these meds! Iím on lamictal, Zoloft, minocycline, risperdal, wellbutrin, and a small dose of Xanax as needed. Iím still depressed and Iím not functioning well so whatís the point? I donít understand why they donít work for me... some people can be on 1 antidepressant and feel great. Iím just worried that if I get off meds my symptoms will be worse but thereís no way to know except to do it. I have been on meds for years and Iím still gaining more and more weight... I donít really eat much. The weight gain is causing so many other physical health problems that Iím starting to not be able to hike which is what I love. So whatís the point? Iím just so sick of dealing with this...

Welcome to PC.

Well, I've come to believe that polypharmacy is devastating to the fragile balance of the human brain, and that the long-term effects on individuals, not to mention society as a whole, won't be appreciated for perhaps another 20 years. Nevertheless, you're taking powerful chemicals that cannot and should not be stopped or tapered without medical supervision because the results can be catastrophic.

In the not-too-distant past, I took some comfort in being medicated, and the more medications I was prescribed, the more I believed that I was too ill to function without them. I took some odd pride in this which I find baffling and quite sad. I've really struggled with this concept but am finding solutions that work better for me.

I hope you continue to post.

Thanks, I think Iím going to talk to my doctor about getting off lamictal and risperdal. I understand the purpose of the other ones but those two seem redundant. Lamictal is messing with my liver and risperdal is causing weight gain. Hopefully heíll be with the plan...
