Default What is your Y2K story?

I was 6 at the time. I was too young to understand what was going on. I really am glad I was too young. I would have been very scared. I do remember my 1st grade teacher having us sit on the floor while she explained it to us. I didnít really pay attention though. My parents didnít talk about it in front of me. I donít think they were all that worried.

I was just watching a documentary now, and I guess news reporters were telling people to go out and stockpile weapons, and that there would have been terrorist attacks, and inmates escaping from prisons, and dog packs. What was creepy though was that the only reason there wasnít a problem, was because Microsoft knew ahead of time so they fixed the problem. So itís not like people were overreacting, itís that Microsoft fixed the issue. Because if they hadnít, something would have happened.

Microsoft didnt "fix it". Figure, microsoft at the time maybe had responsibility for 1/1 millionth of all computers or programs? Thats how many microsoft would have fixed.

People all over the world worked on computers and programs for at least five years before y2k to make sure nothing would break.

I didnít worry about it. I didnít do anything to prepare for it and fortunately it all worked out. Fun question! I hadnít thought about this being an interesting part of ďhistoryĒ now.

I was 12 at the time so I didn't understand much either. I heard that it might be an issue but it was theoretical. I only read it somewhere on the internet (my family was one of the few who had internet at the time). It wasn't mentioned in the mainstream media here as far as I can remember or if it was, there definitely weren't instructions to prep or anything like that. No one I knew at the time took it very seriously. But I was just a child at the time.
I thought if something happened it would be exciting, I didn't understand the potential risks.

I had a "milennium bug", that's what they called these toys

when you through it down on the floor, it would say "happy 2000!"

pretty pointless really, but I guess it was fun and amusing they had those for sale

I was 26 at the time. My church had a huge New Year's Eve bash - I remember tickets were $100 each. A group of friends and I all went and had a great time, drank too much. The next morning I had to be at an event for a grand opening of a new business I had been hired at. I was tired, but it was great.

Yeah thatís why Iím glad I donít remember Y2K. Because it seemed a lot worse than 2012. I was scared out of my mind from 2008 right up until December 21st. It was so bad. I was so obsessed something would happen. I was having multiple therapists reassure me, staff from treatment centers, family. They were saying nothing would happen. I even wanted to call NASA and ask them about about it. I did contact an author though. I was scared shitless. I was literally not planning my life after December 21st. I got into a huge argument with my dad a couple nights before about something because I was so tense and nervous. Then nothing happened and this huge 4 year weight lifted off my chest.

Iíve been the complete opposite with my anxiety these past few years about stuff like that. I am not the same person. Now with all this talk about missiles and nuclear war, Iím all like ďeh, what happens, happens. If itís my time itís my time.Ē
