Default Seeing old places from the past and seeing how much has changed

Does anyone see places they used to be at a lot which holds memories and see how much has changed since then? It could be a college or high school you used to attend, a shopping mall you used to frequent, a restaurant, or even just old neighborhoods. For me, when I see old places like my college I used to attend, I am able to remember how things used to be and how much has changed since then. Same thing for a shopping center I used to frequent. Both places have undergone renovations which in a way symbolizes how things have changed since I graduated from college and no longer frequent the shopping center.

I sometimes see the college I graduated when I go to meet a friend who used to go there too. We meet there since it is a convenient location for her to pick me up so while I am waiting, I will see what is different there. The layout of the college buildings are exactly the same, but the main academic building received new paint, carpeting, and furniture. Even though the furniture, flooring, and painting are different now, I can still remember very clearly how it all used to be. In a sense, it is almost like a ghost memory of myself being there and seeing all the people that used to be there.

In an odd way, I can even still picture the flow of people through the building and remember exactly the booths used to be where I sat at all the time every day for five years. Everyone I knew that I attended college with are now graduated. Even those who were there for five years have graduated by now. Although I still know a few people that work there. Yes not all memories were good, I had to deal with some drama of course like anyone else, I still had good memories that I treasure. Most memories in college were good so I am able to clearly remember how things used to be without feeling bad, knowing that I had a good experience there. It is bittersweet, remembering how things used to be but seeing how much has changed.

Anyone else able to have those kinds of flashbacks or like a ghostly memory of how things used to be back in an older time, even if it was just a few years ago? The renovations look nice, it needed to be done, but seeing how things have changed make it more final in a way, knowing that nothing stays the same for long and things change. It can be bittersweet. For the shopping center I used to frequent, memories weren't as good. At first I enjoyed being there but then after some time, I cam to really dislike it. I went there recently for the first time in a long time just to see what has changed since a major renovation is taking place.

Essentially, there is nothing left of it in the inside. They changed the layout and only some skeletal structures of stores that used to be there remain. Everything else is gone. I used to go to this shopping center with an acquaintance but she became an alcoholic, along with her being arrogant and stuck up which made me stop hanging out with her. She was arrogant and stuck up before hand, but got worse when she abused alcohol so I decided I just couldn't give her anymore chances. Seeing how the shopping center is now makes me glad they are changing it.

Not only did it need to be renovated, but the fact that now almost the entire mall looks different, except for a very small portion of one side of it, it helps get rid of those bad memories. Like I can still remember where things were in a way, but it is very hard since it has been drastically changed. In a way, seeing it completely changed basically erases the bad memories that I used to associate with the shopping center since it looks too different for it to resemble how it used to look. They are not even close to being done yet. Supposedly when they are done, it will essentially be a completely different layout, completely different building with new stores and restaurants.

Does anyone have any places they used to frequent that held bad memories? If the place that held bad memories was renovated, did it help erase those memories since it is much harder to remember how things used to look? I look back at my time going to that place, hoping that maybe the person would be a bit different and mature but unfortunately, she only got worse after graduating college. Became even more rude and arrogant, believed she was better than others and strongly believed alcohol and smoking was healthier than it really was. It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders knowing I no longer go there with her. I would gladly go there with someone else once they finish renovations though.

Same thing with my old high school. The high school I used to attend had eight buildings on the campus, resembling a college campus. They tore it down and built a modern one building high school right across the street. Since the high school I attended is no longer there, all bad memories associated are basically gone. I can still remember bad things that happened, but seeing the new high school doesn't make those memories fresh or more painful. If anything, seeing the new high school now is no different than seeing any other high school that I never attended. I have been inside the new building for a graduation and substituted there a few times but it is basically like going into a school that I never been to so bad high school memories don't haunt me as much as they would if the school was exactly the same as it used to be.

I know what you mean, rdgrad15. Yes, seeing old places can definitely evoke memories. It doesn't change a lot if there have been renovations. As long as I'm aware that this is the place I used to go, the memories just come back. Unless it's completely different, of course. It's a weird feeling, not happy nor painful. Just nostalgic, I guess. Sending many hugs to you

Yeah I agree. It can be nostalgic. And yeah if a place is completely different, like an entirely new building or a building that went through major renovations to the point where the overall appearance was drastically changed inside and out, then yeah the memories donít come back as much since it is way too different. But for minor renovations like my college which just received a new paint job, new furniture, and new carpeting but the layout of the building is exactly the same then the memories are just as strong since I can still picture how things used to be and where they were and looked like easily.

Google street viewing is one of my hobbies. Not only new places are interesting but also places where I used to live or even went on holiday to as a kid. In fact I have google street'ed possibly every place that I have ever been to. Usually its accompanied by recreating certain memories as well.

So yes I totally get it.

my old school is no longer a school.

I wish I went their not only to say goodbye to what I knew (sounds a bit weird, right?), but I'd love to know what they've done with it- it's been everything, a house, a hospital for war heroes, a school... I've moved away now so I doubt I'll ever know

it's the same with my old house

I'm pretty sure if I was to drive down my old street, their'd be a lot I would recognize

but also- in terms of the house, is it empty?. do people live their?. if so what have they done with it?

oh, and I know one of the shops closed up a few weeks before I moved so wonder if something's taken it's place.

Nothing weird about that. I would want to know the same thing. If you live too far away to take a look, perhaps you can look up the address online and maybe it will say what it is now. If the address is still the same for that specific location.

it's worth trying.

the sad thing is is that I did get the oppotunity to see the school before it closed, but I didn't go because of my agoraphobia

driving 2 hours in a car just to see an empty school as well... seems a bit much

Oh yeah true. Yeah in that case it would be kind of pointless. I was thinking it was still in use. Yeah traveling that long just to see an empty school would be a waste of time.
