Default How to stop feeling embarrassed?

Hello all!

Every day when I go to school I always feel extremely embarrassed to be seen by others because of what I’m wearing. My parents are the overprotective type and they think that if I get cold I’ll get sick so they make me bundle up. I have to wear a massive down parka which is so heavy and bulky that I actually have trouble moving around in it. The parka is knee length and has a big furry hood. Underneath this parka I have to wear long puffy coat. As if that wasn’t bad enough, my parents also make me wear snow pants and oversized boots. They also make me wear a hat, a scarf, mittens, and my hoods up.

Nobody else at school dressed like this and it’s so embarrassing to be so bundled up. Especially when I undress in the hallway and stuff all that in my locker, and after school when I have to put everything back on.

I really hate being embarrassed every day does anyone know what to do?

This is something my parents did to me. I wore second hand clothes though, and God were they ugly. Checkered yellow and brown stretch pants. Snowpants when others were just wearing jeans.
The parka actually sounds nice. Can you stuff the other puffy one somewhere on your way to school? If you take a bus, you could "accidentally" leave it there and get it on the way home. You could keep losing them somewhere, like oops, I lost my coat cant find it, and I'm sure they'd tire of getting you a new one. Yeah, just start losing the stuff. It kind of made me smile to read this, my parents were to the extreme of overprotective too. Looking back, I know they just thought the cold weather would get me sick. Sounds like they need to realize that cold weather doesn't cause colds, get them informed on the internet? Best wishes

Hi! I think it's time to be truthful with Mom and tell her that you feel embarrassed wearing this stuff and no one else does so you feel singled out. You could say, please allow me to have something less embarrassing. I appreciate your care and attention, but would prefer xyz at this time, thanks Mom. You can do this!

My parents would be so pissed at me if I lost one of my coats, they’re super expensive. And they’re definitely stuck in their old ways, they absolutely think they’re right about cold weather making me sick.

I always tell my mom how much I hate my winter clothes, she just thinks I’ll get sick if I’m not always completely bundled up. Even if I’m only going outside for a few minutes she still makes me wear all that.

I think you should tell the truth with your mom, try to convince her and make her understand your feeling.

I always tell my parents how embarrassing it is for me to be so bundled up. So they know how I feel they just think that I’ll get sick otherwise.

It is time to talk to the guidance counsellor at your school. If you don't have one, talk to a teacher. They can speak on your behalf to your parents. They can confirm your claims that no one else is dressing this way. They can advise your parents that this in fact is a real problem for you making your life difficult.

I had a very strict mother when it came to clothing and other choices that made things socially difficult for me in highschool. My math instructor realised this and intervened with my mother on my behalf. Things were rough I admit with my mom after this but the problem stopped.

My parents would definitely be so pissed if I did that. They already know that no one else besides me is dressed like that. I wouldn’t even know what to say, I feel like it would be weird if I told my counselor “Hey my parents make me wear these winter clothes, can you tell them to stop?”

No advice just sending warm thoughts your way.
