Confused Do you really think things can turn around? Like, really?

Feeling hopeless now. I spend a lot of time thinking about the past, why things are the way they are for me, and what could have been different, why I ended up like this. I feel all this thinking of the past is a waste of life. Why can't I just live in the present, and make positive things happen for me now.
I feel like such a total failure. I don't work. I don't have a lot of support around me. My therapist is my biggest supporter.

I've been thinking: Do you really think that life can get better. Like, really? Not just a moment here and there, but life being a whole lot better in general. I really doubt it right now. Maybe it is when traumatic things happen to you in the past, a lot of your future is written ahead of time. I have been sad, depressed, for years now. It's like a habit now, a way of life that I can't get out of. I'm working on it with my therapist but it's so incredibly hard. I think she gets a bit frustrated at my slow progress sometimes.

So, do you really think it's possible for life to "turn around"?

I hope everyone is doing good.

This is less negative than is sounds, but I don't believe some of us can "turn around". That is, some of us have passed a point where we can get back our old selves. I've tried to focus on accepting that I won't get the past me back, and instead take (very small) steps towards reinventing myself. I don't necessarily believe I will be happier in the future, but working to make it different than what it is right now is enough to keep me going, usually. Maybe some happiness will return later, but I try not to think about it.

It's kind of a middle of the road answer, and of course it's different for every single person. But in a way, I feel like I'm done with the search for hope and happiness. Still searching for meaning though.

I like what you wrote in Mickey's post earlier today, about taking time to build meaningful relationships. I thought that was good advice for handling our poor relationships with ourselves as well.

I like the idea of reinventing yourself; trying to start anew and not letting the past define you. As if it never existed.

Yes. It turned around for me and I believe with my whole heart that no person is a lost cause. You can do it. Sending you lots of love and strength. Do not give up. I am just a pm away if you need anything at all.

Hi Mat I don't know if you can turn it around. I'd really have to get to know you better. Depression is a sickening symptom, I also live with.

I firmly believe that things can turn around, get better, life can be good. It may not be the same life you had before, or expected to have. But it is definately possible. I have my bad days still, but my life is much more joyous than it used to be.
