Default DBT

Has anyone here done DBT?

Iíve been told for years that I need it. I was diagnosed BPD years and years ago and things just arenít getting better. Iím depressed, miserable, quick to react, struggle with constant suicidal ideation.

I know DBT is really, really expensive. And I donít know that I have time for it.

And truthfully, Iím just not convinced itíll help one bit.

Any success stories out there?

I have heard good things, but haven't had the chance to try it yet. I'm not sure how expensive DBT would be in Canada. I looked into it here, and there's a group that doesn't take insurance. It costs about $150 a week.

There are DBT resources online. Maybe you can download some of them and start doing the exercises on your own or with your therapist if you have one.

I did DBT for free in Edmonton, there was a wait but it was still covered.

And yes, I did find it very helpful, I now only have BPD traits.

There is a website DBT Self Help which I used while waiting.

I was told there was a 2 year wait for public group DBT therapy and they take cases based on severity so you might wait longer.

I opted for private and its $200/week. Worth every penny and better than any therapy I've had before.

If you have a chance to do it, do. There is also a book I think called Borderline Personality Disorder Tool Box. It has reading and activities. My therapist said its the exact same things they teach in group.

I found it to be very helpful, but it's a lot of work if you want to get the most out of it, because you have to practice the skills between sessions.

As some of you may know, my blog is currently off-line due to some problems at my previous site host. I'm working with my web master to rebuild and get back on-line.

I talked to my T this morning about doing this group. He is very supportive of it but thinks we should not meet while I'm doing it. That breaks my heart. I don't want to take a break from him so we'll see what happens. I'm going to talk to him about it more.

I found it marginally helpful. I am old -68 so i would say it works much better if you are young and just starting out. By the time it was available to me my life was pretty much done.

I think it's helpful, as do many people I know, but as with everything, your mileage may vary. There's an online course you can do that's completely free, if you want to give it a go without committing financially: DBT Peer Connections | Building Hope, Community and Skillful Means
