Hello Everyone!
I am curious if anyone here has any insight or advice on anti-anxiety medication that would be relatively "safe" (ie shown not to be severely habit forming or euphoria inducing) for someone in drug addicition recovery. I had a pretty serious problem with abusing benzodiazepines and will not take anything with this drug classification. I have been taking hydroxyzine for about a year now and find it mildly effective for panic attacks. I guess it's my fault for not saying anything to my doctor, but I'm curious if there is anyone else with a similar issue and any insight on medications that have worked well for them. I want to be clear, my thoughts on benzodiazepines are simply my personal preference. I am not trying to knock anyone who is prescribed this class of drug. I am simply curious if anyone in a similar situation has had success with anything else? Either way, I will take any insight with a grain of salt. I am simply curious. I will leave all final decisions to my doctor and myself once I become more educated on the subject.

I'm taking a product called RelaxMax that my GP prescribed because I want to avoid anything that is mood altering if possible. The contents are a pharmacutical grade mix of natural things. Your provider must register with them and provide you with a code in order to purchase it from their website.
I've had it for a few weeks and find it is effective for the low-grade physical symptoms of anxiety. I have not had good luck with it when I'm in panic attack mode, which is when I'm experiencing them frequently throughout the day. It may be worth a try if you consider that we still have panic attacks no matter what drug were taking. Here's a link to the info: RelaxMax™ | Products | XYMOGEN(R)

A lot of people knock buspar. Its catchy name was a marketing ploy whenever it came out as aBUSE-proof (my doctor said this, I have no real idea if its true). The thing with buspar is it doesnt work on panic attacks specifically. it takes time to build up in your system. I can say that it basically eliminates that overwhelming, underlying anxiety...the kind you wake up with and go to sleep with. The kind that increases your heart rate, or keeps it at a baseline above normal. It took 6 weeks for me to wake up one day and realize that the sun was out and I didnt feel like that day was the first day of the apocolypse. I am an alcoholic in recovery. I did not have a benzo problem and I have taken them in the past. My issue was when I was taking them I got too into the "chill factor" where I could easily see myself chilling out enough to pick up a drink.

Anyway we could bump this to the "Psychiatric Medications" section of the site? I probably should have put it there... How do I flag a moderator down?
