Default My anxiety is rising because of jury duty and problems

I received a letter in the mail today that I have been summoned for my first jury duty and I sort of freak out. I have been overthinking the last few hours on what I should do because I can't go. It's scheduled for early next year and I have read that you are in a room with a lot of people and the judge asks you questions. I don't drive and going to an unfamiliar place that it's 22 miles away, when I only go outside the farthest is 3 miles. My mom tells me to get a doctor note because I have general anxiety, could that work to be excused?

I'm so sorry you're struggling, made08 Yes, I do believe that a not from your doctor should be enough. Are you sure you can't go? I don't know exactly what it is, but sometimes things are worth taking a risk or two. But that's just my opinion. Either way, it's your decision. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this

Well yes, you are in a courtroom with many other people. They are just as nervous as you are. I had to go twice and even had to serve, while pregnant and while my job site was closing down. Huge stress. I will save that story for another day. They dont care. They need people to serve, and they have heard all the excuses in the book. Work is no excuse. Child care...maybe...depends on the judge. Having to raise your kid while pregnant with another and work to support it all...no excuse for me. Having ties to police, fire, the lawyers or people involved...will get you out. Not sure about anexiety.
The second time, I wasn't even asked any questions, just sat there all day until they had their quota filled. It is an interesting experience though.

I have sat on a jury. It was quite triggering for me.

What you need to do is get that letter from a doctor or psychiatrist outlining how being on a jury runs the risk of triggering an mental health concern. I practically guarantee this will get you off the hook.

What you must note though is that you are still required to show up for the selection date. It is at this time you present the letter upon which you will be exused. At least this is how it works here.

I didn't find jury duty that bad. They had wi-fi and I just had to sit there for a couple of hours before I was dismissed. They didn't ask me any questions. The only thing that sucked was having to pay for parking.

I would think both having an anxiety disorder and not driving are two legitimate reasons to be able to get out of it. 22 miles away, how would you get there? Wouldn't be fair to you to have to pay a taxi. If you don't drive due to medical reasons have the doctor note that too.

I doubt it. But

(1) my state lets you defer to the date of your choice one time; if you defer ask to get the week between x-mas and new years. NO ONE has a trial then.

(2) my state has you call in the night before and see if you are necessary. If you are not they will tell you so.

Ask to be deferred until the week between xmas and news years and chances are when you call in there will be no need for you to go.
