Confused How long after a yeast infection is it safe to have sex?

I just used the Monostat 1 treatment last night for my first yeast infection (somebody throw a party, it's a MILESTONE. Whoopee). It says on the box that most women will be "cured" within seven days, but should I wait longer before having sex? I've recently entered a relationship with an AMAZING guy, and we both want to get a move on, but it's kind of embarrassing to say, "Nope! I have a yeast infection." Heck, it's even embarassing to lie and say, "I'm on my period." >.<''''''

Oh, and would it make a difference if I'm a virgin?

muse,
Sorry to be so nosy...but did you self diagnose a yeast infection?
Especially if this is your first experience with it, you need to be cautious about treating yourself with over the counter cream.
Perhaps seeing your physician/gynecologist would be better.
There are different types of infections that would require different medications.
Jmo, but you would be safer to be checked, treated, then think about having sex.
Either way, please have your boyfriend use a condom.

Virgin or not I would wait for two weeks before trying to engage in sex after after being treated for a yeast infection.... have you seen a doctor for this? - or did you self treat.

I ask because some infection need more than one treatment to rid the body of the source.... and you can pass it along to the person you're having sex with if it is not cleared up.

Wow, glad I asked!!! Cap, you're not being nosy at all... and yes, I did self-diagnose this, with help from my mother. I TOLD her I should go to the doctor first, but she didn't listen (actually got mad at me when I told her I couldn't use the product she brought home for me immediately because it said to use it AT BEDTIME.... ugh). As I just got a strep test today (negative, yay!) I'd feel really guilty asking to go to a doctor YET AGAIN. If it doesn't get better in 3 days like the medication says it should, I'll ask again... or would that be too late? o.O

Two weeks though? Well poop. Guess I'll have to fess up, since I really wouldn't want him getting this. >.<''' That would be even worse.

Oh and BTW, we will of course use protection! That's one of the reasons we haven't done anything yet, he didn't have a condom on him at the time. Thanks for the reminder, Capp.

Muse, not that you need to be told this but don't forget birth control pills...etc! And to get you and your bf tested for STDs.

muse,
Absolutely go to your physician if there is no improvement within that time frame...sooner if any symptoms worsen or you get new ones.
You mentioned a negative strep test and already being seen by your physician--were you prescribed antibiotics? If so, please check in and at least talk with the nurse. Many antibiotics are a major cause of yeast infections along with other side effects.

Ya made me LOL with 2 weeks, though? well poop...
It's hard to be patient but it is worth the wait.

RE the birth control pills? It's a very good suggestion for you to think about, muse.

I hope you feel better soon! A yeast infection is miserable...

A yeast infection can be itchy and burning--not ways to make the first sexual experience great. For the sake of your own first experience, wait until the infection is gone!

Yeah, I would side with Rhap on this one and say at least two weeks. Although the cure may work within seven days, it takes the vagina some time to rebalance itself. It probably would be very un-sexy if the smell was a little off or the consistency was off because of the yeast infection.

I agree that if you don't see improvement within 3 days, visit a doctor. There are many types of infection a girl can get down there, and some of them can cause nasty things like infertility if left to breed further. Thats not to scare you - thats just a worse case scenario, but definetly if you are still having problems see a doc.

The other thing is, you don't have to say "yeast infection" right out. You can just say something like you were at the doctor and you have a mild infection going on, so you want to wait so its healthy and perfect for both of you. It may be embarassing, but you want to be able to talk about this stuff if you are going to be having sex. And if hes a good guy, he may blush but he wont go running for the hills. If he does, then he wasnt worth it in the first place

Thank you all so, SO SO much for all the great advice!!

I will definitely monitor things carefully and make sure I'm ready before we go any further. And thanks for that subtle way to phrase it, Rainbowzz--that sounds MUCH less icky. XD

Default HALP!! Need some more advice!!!

Okay guys, it's been 7 days since I used the Monostat 1 treatment and I'm still feeling just veeeery slightly uncomfortable around my outer vaginal area, like near my clitoris and around there. Should I go to a doctor? Mom says I should just use another treatment, but the only other thing I have is a Monostat 3 day treatment.

>.< I feel stupid. Mom says the only reason people advise you to see a doc. for things like this is to make sure you don't have an STD. She says it's pointless to spend $85-100 bucks if all I need is another dose of the medicine. I tend to agree, but mom and I aren't exactly seeing eye to eye lately.

So: use the over-the-counter stuff again, see if it clears up on its own, or go to a doctor?
