Default Bipolar vs schizo hallucinations

I am bipolar 1. I have hallucinations and delusions and disassociations and take Zyprexa.

What are the differences between schizophrenia and bipolar 1? Are the episodes brought on by a mood episode in bipolar and not schizophrenia?

I find I don't have to be in a big mood episode at the time. Sometimes one is relatively recent and others I feel just fine and hallucinate. Odd!

from what i recall from school and what i've read from various texts, bipolar 1 psychosis occurs during the manic phase of the mood swings. from personal experience, the hallucinations of schizophrenia don't particularly follow a pattern (though mine show up more when i'm overly stressed). also, the hallucinations of schizophrenia don't typically occur during a particular mood (schizoaffective is a different story). also the major difference between the two disorders is that schizophrenia is generally regarded as a "thought" disorder and bipolar is strictly mood. there are good links all around the web, and the DSM-IV-TR, all explain it better than i ever could.

But if you're sitting in your room cool as a cucumber and the tv receiver box starts telling you to do things, that's still bipolar?

Newtus, schizoaffective disorder is basically a mood disorder with schizophrenia. You would have to have 2 of the 5 main symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, catatonia or negative symptoms) of schizophrenia and also either fully meeting the criteria of either depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. What differentiates it from bipolar with psychotic features is that schizoaffective disorder there must be psychotic symptoms without mood symptoms for at least 2 weeks.

Moose72, are you currently manic, or in any kind of mood episode? Is this happening right now? If you are not having any kind of mood episode, then it can be schizoaffective disorder. You are having auditory hallucinations. In bipolar you can have auditory hallucinations, but there MUST be either depression, mixed episode, or mania.

How close to an episode of emotion does a hallucination have to be? I usually feel fine when I hallucinate. I do have other big symptoms of bipolar so I'm pretty sure I have it. They don't really make a big deal out of hallucinations for some reason. I find them fascinating. Especially the one that was giving me commands and I heard music as if it were on an old phonograph .

they dont? who? the docs?
if its just in the mood maybe not.

part of what convinces (or whatever) docs that think i have schizo so much is not just that i hear voices or think untrue stuff but they know i think the tv sends me messages etc. i googled it and its called the schneidarian classification or schneiders first rank symptoms that automatically classify it as schizophrenia.

heres an excerpt from wikipedia

Quote:
First-rank symptoms in schizophrenia

Audible thoughts (thought echo)

Voices heard arguing

Voices heard commenting on one's actions

Somatic/thought passivity experiences (delusions of control)

Thought withdrawal

Thought insertion - Thoughts are ascribed to other people who intrude their thoughts upon the patient

Thought broadcasting (also called thought diffusion)

Delusional perception (i.e. taking a normal sensory perception to mean a bizarre situation such as taking seeing an aeroplane as indicating the patient should be the next president)
