Cons:

forgetfulness * confusion * tardive dyskinesia
|

Increased dosage caused forgetfulness which caused me to miss a few doses. I called the doc and had this medication adjusted again. Next thing I know I was locked up in the psych ward, confused, and had a medication-induced psychosis. If you take this drug, please be very careful taking this medication and have a pill organizer. You should also be monitored closely by your prescribing physician, counselor, family, and/or significant other. I do not recommend antipsychotics for anyone.

Pros:

Has somewhat reduced the # or severity of my manic states
|
|
Cons:
|
KNOCKS YOU OUT, confusion (more-so than already), forgetfullness, VERY EXPENSIVE
|
|
This medicine is supposed to prevent psychotic episodes - or at least aleviate some of them - but I still have them. It is a guaranteed sleep medication for me - within a half hour, I am out and if I am woken up, I'm in the thickest fog imaginable. I become more forgetful than I already am and I am much more confused. Granted, I'd rather be 'catatonic' than raging, but I surely did not ask to become 'zombied out'.

After getting started on it I had nasty side efffects and it did nothing! Depression, severe weight gain, headaches, makes veins, face and skin very nasty! Dizzy, faint feeling, extreme loss of contact with body (felt like I had a really nasty case of the flu or maybe even Autism.)
Used it for Schizotypal!

I have major depression and used seroquel to get some rest at night. I can't say I won't recommend it for others because I don't know. It made me too drowsy and I couldn't get up in the mornings. I was also very confused while on it and it only made my depression worse.

helps control anxiety level, controls nightmares

Cons:

difficult waking up after taking it.

I am provided this med from my pdoc's samples. I take it when my anxiety level is high & it helps best if I can just lay down & sleep off the anxiety attack. If I take a high dose, it is harder to wake up immediately & can be drowsy most of the day. It helps me go into a deep sleep to avoid the nightmares from the PTSD. During the day, if anxiety is high, a low dose helps keep me calm & can still function most of the time. I don't think it would be a good solution if I had a job due to the drowsyness. It was the replacement for thorazine when I had a bad reaction to it. I have been lucky to avoid a similar reaction with this med. I do have a hard time functioning when I need to take a larger dose of seroquel, but it has helped me through the PTSD symptoms I have been dealing with.

I was given this for a sleep issue and didn't sleep much better but was very apathetic, flat affect, I did NOT eat much....I just sat till it wore off. I also had heart palpitations on it. I didn't like it at all and feel it should not be given unless one has a psychotic issue.

I don't know how to explain this med well. It was provided to me by a health physician as a sleeping aide who thought that I may be bipolar the day she first met me. This stuff KNOCKED me out moments after i'd take them, then i'd have paranoid sleep and always had a hard time waking up out of a nightmare (usually after skipping a night) -- i took this stuff for about 2 weeks. When I told my physician, she told me not to skip and doubled my dose, hallejuah. So on the double dose i was so depressed I felt like killing myself so i bought a 5 shot mocha frap and never felt so depressed in my life. I ended up leaving work early and scheduled to meet with an actaul psychiatrist.

helpful for anxiety

Cons:

can take some time to adjust to and affect sleep quality
|
|
I was on 250mg of this 2x daily for a few years... I found it to be pretty good. It numbed my feelings basically, which was what I wanted. I stopped taking it because I was concerned about it affecting my cognition (starting back at school). Since then I've thought about going back on it and I have started taking it a couple of times. Each time I started I started on 50mg in the evening. I found it affected my quality of sleep (negatively). I would be zonked out (didn't wake up for a fire alarm) and I felt really groggy the next morning. It would also zonk me out at night within one hour. It takes around one week for your system to adjust to it. I found it to be fairly helpful but I'm concerned about not waking up for fire alarms so I'm not taking that one any more! That being said if I'm having a really hard time of it 50mg of Seroquel is a useful alternative to a benzo...

this drug has made my sleepness night much better. the rapid thoughts have deceased incredibly

|
Cons:

You feel like your a zombie--but to me, sometimes that is ok--quite sedating
|
|
Has made my horrible anxiety and increased aggression and emotional ups and down (I am a rapid cycler) more tolerable. I am not saying it is the greatest drug in the world, but I will say I do sleep better now, decision making has been better. My manic episodes have decreased, although when I get depressed I really get depressed. I can't take an antidepressant as part of my drug regeime because they cause extreme mania. Lamictal is for the stabalizing effect and Klonopin for the horrible anxiety I feel.

keeps away most negative symptoms of bipolar
|
|
Cons:

I have bipolar I, with psychosis. This is the only med that has ever helped with hallucinations and paranoia. I think it works way better than the lithium cr that I take. The lithium has so many side effects.
Seroquel's main side effect that I have noticed is tiredness, and the weight gain that goes with it.
Also, the actual price without insurance would be prohibitably expensive.
I have not tried any other antipsychotics but this one does work well for me.

I've been taking this for about a year and half now, and it does knock you out it does leave you dis-oriented should you wake up in the middle of the night & I sleepy all the time, but I also have to say that I 4 other drugs for depression, zoloft 200mg,mirtazapine 45mg,(buspirone 60mg,hydroxyzine 100mg,these are for anxiety),and to honest all of these have made me more withdrawn, not that I mind, I like being by myself.

great sleep, possible mood elevation

Cons:

drowsy upon waking
|
|
Along with Lithium, took 100mg at night, and for the first few weeks it forced me to bed soon after taking it. Gradually I was able to stay up a few hours in a drowsy state. Sleep was very deep, I never once woke up during the night. Takes a while to get going in the morning. I sensed a slight improvement in my mood, but not much. Did not help with irritability I had been having.

Helps with mood. I get quality sleep
|
|
Cons:

I have to take a different dose every night as the effects can vary daily.

This medication has saved me. It is expensive but it has helped with my elevated moods and I use it mainly as a sleep aid. I have been dreaming for the first time in a long time when I take it which means i'm getting better quality of sleep. I take between 300mg and 400mg before bed. The only weird part is I have to take a 100mg, wait an hour and see how it effects me because it's important not to take more than you need and it seems to affect me differently every day depending on my mood. It did take about 2 months to get used to this medication so give it time.

Diabetes side effect

I have great concerns about this medicine. FDA has issued a warning letter to the AstraZeneca company for its misleading material in regards to the risk of developing diabetes and related health iusses. Read the article My 12 year old son, took seroquel 100 mg TID for a total of 300 mg a day - the recomended doesage - for less than six months. We are now faced with a life of diabetes related health issues. Be warned - of the risks assocated with this medicine.

Its hard to determine all the positive aspects since I was on other medications. As soon as I started the treatment I gained nearly 40 lbs. People mistakenly thought I was pregnant. My sister too had the same exact side effects. As soon as I came off the bloating came down and so did some of the weight.

I just started this medication about a week ago. I am in an acute stage of hypomania and this medication does put me to sleep. However, it knocks me out and I find it difficult to keep up physically with my racing thoughts and even coffee has little effect in waking me now in the mornings. That being said, the verdict for me,is still out.

Definetly gives me some peace in my head, along with a good nights sleep. Have had a mild back ache since i have started on this drug. Doc. says its nothing to worry about though. Still have very much anger and agitation within just to tired to care. Has helped with other symtoms, somewhat leveled off for a couple of months.

Works for me!

|
Cons:

Would be very expensive if on a high dose

I am on the minimum dose (25mg at night) and find that it is perfect for me. It allows me to sleep with few discernable side effects, and perhaps more importantly, removes the intrusive nightmares, images and thoughts that plague me with PTSD. To date (about 6-8 months) I have not noticed a dose related dependence or need to increase for the same effect. On the occasions that I have missed it, or take it too late in the evening (I find that around 7pm for a 10pm bed time), difficulties in falling asleep and 'bad thoughts' return. Maybe not for everyone, but I'm a convert.

Weight gain, heat strokes, akathesia

This stopped working after 5 years at 600mg/night.
Voices came back stronger than ever. I also took Wellbutrin SR, lorazepan, Depakote, Neurontin, Benadryl, Verapamil, Atenolol, Trazadone, Artane, and Ambien. All at the same time, so it was hard to tell which drug was causing which problem.
I have been slowly reducing the meds on my own since no doc will help.
I hate sie effects! They are worse than the illness!

knocks you out fairly quickly

I was given this for insomnia and nightmares related to PTSD. For the first few months it worked great. I slept the whole night through and got to sleep quickly, as compared to lying awake at 3am and waking frequently. After a year, the side effects kicked in. I woke up a few times to hallucinations similar to those experienced on Ketamine (possibly a flash-back), went from weighing 120 to 145 quickly, and became entirely apathetic (I used to be an artist and musician, now I have no passion for either). So I would only recommend this for a few month's good sleep.

Knocks me out so stops a manic episode
|
|
Cons:
|
Takes awhile to kick in (up to an hour) so manic episodes have already wrecked havoc
|
|
1year, 2 months 250mg now down to 150/day Side effects:
EXTREME drowsiness
Confusion/Paranoia/Groggy/Almost complete loss of short-term memory
Fast heart rate/Heart arrythmias
Shortness of breath
Mad Munchies (which will make you gain weight - though I haven't gained any b/c my metabolism is very fast) It did it's job while I was on it but I am now in search for a better med. The 'job' I am referring to is to knock-you-out so you don't do or think crazy things. It basically is designed to sedate you enough so you cannot function. ------------------------------
March 16, 2008 I am now on Lamictal 200mg 2x day, Fluphenazine 1mg morning 2mg night, Xanax XR 1mg/day, Ativan 0.5mg night, and Focalin XR 20mg morning, for Bipolar I, ADHD, Tourrete's Syndrome, and Anxiety. I no longer take Seroquel. I stopped taking it back in January of 2007 because I went Paramedic school and could not think while on it. Thank god I stopped seroquel. I now have a full time job as a Paramedic and have had one since December 4th 2007. I am a certified Paramedic. I have completed both EMT-Basic (Jan-July 07, and EMT-Paramedic, March-Dec 07). Now I work 2-3x 24 hour shifts a week saving people's lives. I just want to let you know that there is hope for you when you are down. I was in a deep dark horrific place for over 2 years and now I am doing great! I wish the best for you!

Helped calm my rapid cycling, took the edge off the depression, helped combat negative effects of other antideppressants
|
|
Cons:
|
intense drowsiness for the first couple weeks, increased appitite
|
|
After starting prozac i started cycling rapidly between acute mania and intense depression with psychosis. I would switch up to 8 times a day. It was very exhausting and debilitating. I started Seroquel at 100mg a day. I currently take 700mg after taking it for two months. It really helped stop the intense, troubling cycling and helped me get back to functioning properly. I am currently taking zoloft to help with depression. The Seroquel really helps with the negative side effects (more intense mania and anxiety associated with use of ssri's in bipolar patients) and makes it bearable.

Takes care of most of my manic and depression episodes

Cons:

kinda makes you groggy, forgetfull.
|
|
I was diagnosed as bipolar II 5 years ago. I was constantly on zoloft or effexor which took care of the depressed side, but they always sent me in a mania. Seroquel seems to take care of both sides. I'm taking 800 mg a day of it, and the only thing that i don't really like about it is that it seems to make me forgetfull and so taking 4 pills a day sometimes is hard unless I leave my self notes in my house and office to remind me to take the meds. I'm also on several other meds to help me sleep at night.

I've taken a bunch of antipsychotics, and this one works best for me. I hate to think how many days (weeks?) it would take me to get to sleep if I didn't take it every night.

One of the worst nightmare medicine. I was on it for I don't know what.
I gained 70lb in one month! Experienced ulcer like symptms, developed acne, lost hair, face became 3X the original size, lost entire future plans.
I had no life. Stopped me from eating well. Lost sleep. Knees got weak. Could no longer barely walk. Lost vision. Could not stay still, lay still. The worst!

It totally turned my whole perspective on its

of very loving individuals who were very capable
and I will always remember their kindness and

I stopped taking this about a year ago and have recently gone back on it. After I came off I lost about 15kg but in the last couple of months have put weight on again. I am VERY sensitive to meds and am easily sedated- serequel even at 25mg put me to sleep where-ever I was (at the table, on the floor etc)once it worked. After a month I adjusted and was able to increase my dose ok. (was on 225mg/day; currently on 50-100mg/day)

Tried it while looking for treatment of bipolar2. The whole time is a blur of mostly sleeping. I don't know how I felt, but I certainly couldn't function like that. I think this one is more suited for those with psychotic symptoms.

I'm on Medicaid... otherwise it would be over $200 for 30-200mg pills and $50 for my 25mg. I like it, but I'm probably going to get upped again.

when i finally get woken up i am in a fog state and pist off more and my day or night is ruined everyone is mad at me and blamming me for everything
|
|
i dont really get any side effects from any meds so idk. this really just knocks me out with in 30 minutes atleast. i have to take atleast 100mg for it to do anything. but then i am taken so many other meds and taken care of my child alone to so i am on overload and managing. this is really on knocking me out when i wake up i get pist more and yelled at for being more angry like its my fault anyway. that is really pissing me off. i am really just taking this medication as a test subject for the government due to i am a military member and meds dont really work for me so the shit will effect on the civilians in a bad way if they go off of what it does to me. i dont take this shit like it says on the website says to take it. they havent told me how to take it. i just was told to she what works. i read it and i am like oh great. i got siezures already and this shit can screw me up. i am on to many meds and this can make me die and they dont care. thank you us government. lol
but besides all that i havent had any problems and i am liken the effects so far from what i am doing with it but the part with the ppl that are living with me and forcing me to live a "normal" life and wake up at 0500 and find a job when i am disabled and can't work so they try and find stuff for me to do so i am awake when they are at work. that pisses me off. and they say i am phsyco because i am angry. why do you think i am angry. for over a year i have been living this way and i got major head trauma and was dead for a while and in a coma and when i woke up i fought to get back to walking and when i did, everyone said he is fine get him the hell out of here and start working. but i can't if i was able to do so i would still be in the marine corps fighting for this country. bad memory, bad eyesight now, loss of hearing, sever headaches, mild seizures. and they say i am fine and they get pist at me when i get angry at them when they yell at me and kick me out of the house when i sleep due to the meds wtf. can you stop the pills from making you sleep.

Reduces manic symptoms. Helps with sleep, haven't needed any sleeping pills since I started.
|
|
Cons:
|
Legs feel strange after taking this, mild weight gain (about 3 kg in 7 months).
|
|
After 7 months, no more side effects. 300mg/day costs 105 euros (about $140) a month. I also have Effexor 150mg/day, 73 euros ($100) a month. Because I have bipolar diagnose, I'm entitled to so called higher special reimbursement – 100% of the price and The Social Insurance Institution of Finland pays my drugs (http://www.kela.fi/in/internet/english.nsf/NET/131003131216MH?openDocument). Greetings from Finland.

LONG ANALYSIS BUT VERY GOOD FOR BIPOLAR PEOPLE WHO WANT STABILITY WITHOUT SACRIFICING INTELECT. I have been diagnosed with bipolar w/ psychosis. I was diagnosed with this after being hospitalized because I thought that I was being chased by the police for a crime I thought I commited. It was a very scary experience both during the hallucinations and after that I can go from being a completely normal young man to a deranged psycho. In the hospital it took me a week and a half to recover and return to somewhat normalcy. I forget the drugs I was on but they were very old and powerful. I tried albilify and depakote. I consider myself a very smart third year engineering student and I could notice the slightest feeling of being sedated or druged. When I switched to seroquel I began taking provigil along with it to help with my concentration. I take seroquel (300mg) at night before bed and it puts me to sleep in about 30-45min (which I think is a huge plus b/c sleep is vital to having a healty psych). It sedates me at night but by morning I am refreshed and ready to study. My moods are very stable and I am happy to say I am neither manic or depressed. I only see my psychiatrist every couple of months and at my last visit I discussed getting off the drug because I was feeling so good. She said that it is great I am feeling this good but getting off the medicine risks me having another episode. I never want to go back to that place. So I will continue this medication my whole life. Only side effects are immediate sedation and weight gain. I have gained around 20 lbs and I am sure I can work that off once I get in a workout routine. I highly recommend this drug for bipolar people who do not want to lose any intelect from their treatment program.

have been on seroquel for over a year and a half. went from sleeping 2 hours a night to 6+ hours. i take between 150-450mg... usually on the low side. at first it made me groggy and slur my words but that vanished. at this point little to no "hangover". i was locked up for 36 days and completely miserable and depressed but seroquel allowed me to sleep like a human. not too sure if it helps my mania or depression that much but all in all i feel it has helped me to level out my mood. has not affected my blood sugar which was a concern of mine (all the moreso because diabeties runs in my family... but i do my part by consuming minimal sugar/carbs). i have been diagnosed bipolar-1 and believe that between seroquel and lithium am better off.

Pros:

Helps insomnia, hypomania, depression.
|
|
Cons:
|
Intense junk food craving, weight gain, minor back pain
|
|
I started taking seroquel in a clinical trial for depression, and it worked very well. After the study the kept me on it at 200mg. It really helps my sleep and depression. I have tried many SSRI's for depression and they all didn't work or made me manic or increased my anxiety at higher doses. It doesnt make me feel so sedated anymore, and even from the beginning I wasnt too groggy in the morning. Without it I am drained in the morning and quite depressed throughout the mid day. The Side effects that bother me is the intense craving of sugary food after taking it. It has made me gain weight because of that. I am finding that as long as I don't let myself eat after I take it my cravings are barely noticeable. I also get minor back pain (which I cant say for sure is the seroquel). Overall, I would rate it the best antidepressant I have taken so far. I have taken celexa, lexapro, paxil, and zoloft with little or no improvement.

You could sleep for 96 hours straight if you
did not have anything better to do.
But w/ all the risks involved INCLUDING WEIGHT GAIN,
I stopped taking it after noticing I was gaining weight
even with a routine minimum intake diet and a high cardio workout regime.

takes away anxiety, only take prn @ 25mg (or less)
|
|
Cons:
|
I get soooo stooonnnneeeedddd
|
|
I am not raving about this drug, but it works if I catch myself having negative thoughts all day, and major social phobia. I only take prn at a low dose (12.5-25mg). I do not take while I am anxious because I will be out like a light in 2 minutes. So I try to make sure I am alone, and near my bed when I take it. Usually the 8-10 hour sleep I get after taking seems to reset my brain the next day and I feel better. If I take it too many days in a row (like 4 days in a row) I find it very activating (mania inducing, and makes my temper flare).

It stops the mania and gives you some sleep
|
|
Cons:

Bad quality of sleep. Keeps my mood on the bottom half of being a negative one; I miss the mania
|
|
I have been on this medication for my bipolar steady for ten months or more, still I do not see/feel what the positive effects are; unless you like having a block of concrete dropped ontop of you from the sky each night. It makes me extreamly depressed, heavy eyed, ties me to the bed every single morning. But the doctor says that I wont feel the full effects until I am on 400mg! I am currently on 100mg and counting. When will I feel desirable effects. I want positive desireable effects. I am not set on becoming a zombie, especially when it feels this bad. If it were up to me I would throw that bottle of pills out the window; but my doctor still has me convinced there is hope. If things do not change soon, I am going to have this changed.

It definitely calmed me down, but there were far too many side effects for me to be happy with this treatment. The combination of Depakote and Seroquel was probably the worst possible treatment option for me, and it was one of the first treatments for my bipolar disorder. And I ended up taking so much to calm me down that I ended up in complete sedation (700mg/day).

Just got on the medicine last Friday. First day was not great at all. Was very dizzy and kept walking into the bathroom wall. Suprised didn't have a black eye and I can't remember if I punched the wall. I got upset that I kept walking into the wall. Does anyone know what it post to help? The psychatrist put me on it as I mention. I been self-injury my pretty body. I am doing better being on it.
Thanks

A drug that needs a strong doctor to monitor the dosage to limit side effects. To much of this stuff isn't good unless you really need it.

The meds is helping as I mention. I think it depends where you are for the pricing. If I didn't have insurance to help pay for meds, I would have to pay 120.78 The negative is that make sure you don't have to clean room for anything. After I take the meds, 30min latter I am all sleepy and stuff. Almost fell off the couch one night

Helps with sleep; has anti-manic effects.
|
|
Cons:

Insanely weird dreams; too much sleep; weight-gain, although not nearly as bad as anti-depressants.
|
|
All in all, I would recommend this drug to people suffering from bipolar disorder, unless you're on a serious price budget. If anything, it will help you sleep like no other drug. And it doesn't knock you out cold as soon as you take it like other meds such as Ambien; it slowly implements its sleepy effects on you. It also tends to help prevent manic episodes. With higher dosages, I've noticed a big difference in controlling myself from going manic on people.

Hi price, 7.50 per pill at my pharmacy. I don't really notice any side-effects except for a headache now and then. Seems to help with psychotic issues and depression and anger. I would rate it a little over good. I have been though a dozen psych medications before being put on this one. I have had the medication dose adjusted a couple of times.

I'm confused by this drug because I really don't know if it's working or not. I started on 25 mg, then 50mg, and now I'm up to 100mg, but I don't really feel different. I have had NO side effects at all and little change in my mood, so I don't know if it's working or not. I took Symbyax before Seroquel and I definitely felt great on that, but I wouldn't stop gaining weight so I switched to Seroquel. Too bad about the Symbyax, because it seems like Seroquel is not helping me at all.

The biggest issue is the price. Walgreens charges almost $600.00 USD for a 30 day supply! Without insurance, I would have to get it across the border, in Canada or Mexico.

I have been on Seroquel for the past 3 years. During this time I have had it at 600 mg and then in the past few months 200 mg. When I first started it, I gained 20 lbs. When I went down to 20 mg I lost 15 lbs. Now that I am off Lithium my doctor wants me back up to 600 mg. It's been only a week and I have already gained 5 lbs. I really hate taking this drug. I wish I could stop it.
----
8/19/08
I am going to start to withdraw from this drug. It will take me a while since I am on 800 mg. I will let you know what happens along the way. Hopefully weight loss is on the list.

I love this medication, it has been a miracle pill in retrospect to my bipolar and insomnia. The downfall is the new findings that this medication will make you 3 times more likely to become diabetic or have blood disorders. In my case, I have gained about 40 lbs in the last 3 and a half months, due to my sugars dropping about an hour after i eat, i feel shaky and get hot and cold flashes and i must eat again- hence the weight gain. It makes me very sad to have to choose my happiness over my health because my happiness is in direct correlation to my health. but wouldn't chance having diabetes for nothing. Diabetes is a horrid disease.

Pros:

calms me down, helps with hallucinations/delusions, sleep through the night
|
|
Cons:
|
confusion, can't wake up in morning
|
|
I take 50 mg at noon to calm me down (i tend to get very agitated and manic in the afternoon) and 300 mg at night. Puts me to sleep at night - nothing will wake me. has helped with hallucinations and delusions. at first i slept for 4 days straight! but now that i'm used to it I can't sleep without it and my boss won't let me work in the afternoon unless I've had my noon time dose. Would recommend.

Pros:
|
sleep better at night-reduces manic behavoir
|
|
Cons:
|
too much makes me groggy and stumbly
|
|
I quite like the effect of this medication. I take small amounts - 25mg during the work week and 50mg on the weekends. Was given this drug during last year's hospitalization for manic episode. I liked the effects so much that I asked for it on a daily basis. I take it just before bed and within half an hour I am asleep for the night...excepting tonight At fist I was taking too much (100mg)and found that getting up in the middle of the night to use the washroom was a dangerous procedure, I was afraid of falling down the stairs...no co-ordination. With this drug...less is more. It takes me about 45 minutes in the morning and I tend to be a bit down then, but it passes quickly. I haven't noticed any increased weight gain on top of the weight gain that I had when I started my lithium 5 years ago. I would rather be overweight than confined to a ward for pshycosis.

Clear head, I can think before I act now.
|
|
Cons:
|
unique side affect apparently
|
|
I am on 300mg/day for 2 months now for BPD. I am a lot more productive and stable than without the medication. However, BPD antics slip through and I'll go one to 3 days as if the medication has lost all effectiveness. I either need to up my dose or switch meds. I have no negative side affects that I can notice on 300mg/day. However, I want to try a higher dose to hopefully snub out the BPD antics or at least reduce them to one day only. My problem is when I up my dose to 400mg or more, after 1 hour or so my heart races as if I have been running a marathon. Slight audible/visual hallucinations set in but are tolerable. I practice controlled breathing and slow my heart rate down to a less worrisome rate. Once I get my heart rate down, I become extremely weak and light headed. At this point, I start to see/feel/hear exactly what everyone usually feels just seconds before they pass out: Complete numbness over the entire body, tunnel vision with darkness around the edges. I undergo what seems like a life or death battle to keep from passing out. It comes out of nowhere. I tried upping to 400mg/500mg about 3 times and it takes every ounce of mental strength I have to ward off blacking out. I am 24. I had an echo performed a year ago which showed my heart is extremely healthy. Blood work came back as healthy. I am a smoker of 6 years now. My resting heart rate always checks out around 50 bpm. I have experienced a panic attack before which feels very different than what I am explaining since I have no problems controlling my breathing, no chest pain, no racing thoughts. This question is for anyone that has had similar side affects. What course of action did you take?

Did help with sleep to start with

|
Cons:

Weight gain, strange sensation in chest, drowsiness next day

I started on 25mg, went up to 300mg eventually over about 6months. It kind of helped with sleep sometimes, but not so much towards the end, and along with the weight gain I decided to just quit taking it. I felt more alive when I stopped taking it. It was ok, I don't really have an opinion one way or another. It's worth trying I guess!

I gained weight despite being thin and in shape and always working out and eating healthily. It was prescribed for sleep and 50mg worked for a bit and now it isn't and I won't go up in dosage. Makes me like a zombie and the freakiest thing is that it has caused my hair to become straighter. I had naturally curly hair and now it's lost most of it's curl. I'm off this stuff ASAP.

groggy, shakes, bad dreams, loss of balance, forgetfulness , vision blurry

I thought this med was awful.I got the shakes so bad I could'nt walk. I forgot everything and spent most of my time confused.I started seeing things and was really jumpy. I had either no sleep (I've been up for three days now) or I'd have terrible nightmares. Right now I'm so fatigued and I keep trying to go to sleep but all that happens I just lay there. I also keep stubbling into things like a drunken sailor.
I mean it is difficult for me to type this because my hands are shaking and the screen is blurry. I started weening myself of it yesterday. I can't live like this.

Groggy, confused, irritable, difficulty functioning at work

I just started taking this stuff about 6-8 weeks ago and it certainly curbed the racing thoughts that stop me from sleeping but at a cost. I'm exceptionally groggy everyday, some days I feel like I'm practically comatose. Doc wouldn't reduce my dose. I only take 100 but its had a strong effect. Does this grogginess ever wear off?

Can someone give me feedback here? I'm on a state low-income (free) insurance plan, which I got on after losing my job this year. I started having panic attacks a couple months ago, after being horribly stressed all year over work and then losing my job, and one day ended up in the emergency room. The ER doctor put me on Xanax and said I needed to get off it as soon as possible and get on Paxil, which would be a better long-term remedy for my anxiety, but said I needed to see a psychologist and get the Paxil prescription from him. I went to a psychologist, the only one I can see with my crappy insurance, and he gave me Seroquel, saying it's comparable to Paxil but they didn't have free Paxil and did have free Seroquel. I took it for two nights and can't bring myself to take it again. It puts me to sleep in about a half hour but it's a terrifying half hour. I start losing my ability to think, my memory, my motor skills and coordination, then finally lose consciousness. I'll sleep for 14 hours straight and then wake up in that same state as when I fell asleep, totally debilitated for about 2 hours, until I've taken a Xanax and had a lot of coffee. I'm guessing that my state psychologist is just an idiot and gave me the wrong drug, does anyone know if this is correct? I can't see a single benefit from this drug for me, and it makes me completely disfunctional. Is it really a standard treatment for anxiety/panic attacks, and is it a reasonable replacement for Paxil?

Was given 50mg at night for sleep, depression, anxiety after detoxing from xanax over a year ago. initial weight gain (30lbs) have recently lost it pretty easily, not much food craving anymore. fell good "normal", sleep good, no grogginess but sudden sleep after taking it, you just have to be ready for bed when you take it. Its a low dose. Was given to me because it is supposedly non-addictive. I definetly do not feel doped as I did with the xanax (which I apparently liked too much). I think it's very helpful, don't miss feeling of xanax at all.

Muscle soreness, feeling of apathy

I'm currently in the thongs of Klonopin withdrawal and my doc gave me this to help with sleep. What I got, instead of actually sleeping, were muscle pains and an incredible feeling of pure apathy. I work out every day and this is not something I can tolerate. It might work for some, but the side effects suck.

I have been taking Seroquel for about 4 years now and it has helped me a lot. I started on 200mg a day, which was raised to 400mg a day after a suicide attempt.
I have never gotten a real diagnose from my psy, only that I've gotten some personality dissorder and something else which i've forgotten. I actually don't care anymore what I've got, I can cope with life now, that's enough for me.
Main reason for taking these meds were depressive symptoms which led to panic attacks. Low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, reocuring thoughts, ... Now I can still have these thoughts, but I can handle them now. I can just say to myself it's ok and go on with my life, while I used to not be able to stop thinking about them.
I really like the side-effect that makes me sleepy. I have gotten sleep-issues most of my life; from nightmares to sleepwalking (early part of my life) and insomnia (later part). Now I fall asleep 30-45 minutes after I take my meds and wake up about 8 to 9 hours later. I usualy take my meds when I'm in my bed, otherwise I might not get there. I have fainted on my way to bed, waking up on my kitchen floor.
I don't experience any weightgain (I'm 1m94 to 75 kilos, so weightgain wouldn't even bother me) and I don't feel groggy during the day.
I have stopped taking these meds for 6 months once (because I was feeling better) but that didn't really work for me. I did sleep quite good after about 3 months, but my head was troubling me again. so I guess I'll be taking these for the rest of my life.

I should mention that I also use marihuana on a daily basis, which has some effects that are simular to some of the side effects of these meds.
also i quite like the effects deanrobbins mentions when he takes seroquel (It puts me to sleep in about a half hour but it's a terrifying half hour. I start losing my ability to think, my memory, my motor skills and coordination, then finally lose consciousness.) although it's sometimes a bit scary (feels like i'm dying or I suddenly realize I'm not breathing) I quite like these side effects. when I smoke a joint and take the meds, these effects get even more heavy. and a negative aspect for me is that I have to take these meds every day at athe same time. since I sleep 8-9 hours after taking them, I have to take them at about half past ten so I can get up at 7-8 o'clock. this has been a problem sometimes if I have to work late and still get up early. (I'm an artist and when I have deadlines it's sometimes not possible to take my meds on time, because I have to finnish a project) these moments I can't take 'em and then I don't sleep. (don't even get tired)

Before Seroquel, I would actually wake up having panic attacks...... yes.... I apparently had them in my sleep (they are mania-induced)! Alprazolam helped calm them, but it certainly is not a preventative med. 25 mg of Seroquel has cut dowm on the night-time panic attacks...... from 2 or 3 a week to about once every few months!!! It has also helped with my Bipolar I (I am still trying other meds to take during the day.... it knocks me out). I have gained about 8 lbs, but starting to take it off with diet and exercise, which, of course, have their own benefits!

------
8/19/08 I am going to start to withdraw from this drug. It will take me a while since I am on 800 mg. I will let you know what happens along the way. Hopefully weight loss is on the list.
------
2/2/09
I believe it is important to let you all know that if you ever want to withdrawal from this drug someday, that you should do so under a doctor's supervision.
With that said, I had to do mine without a doctor's supervision because I can not get health insurance due to my bi-polar pre-existing condition. I love America. I started weening off the medication the first week of December. I stopped the medication after a pretty fast withdrawal period three weeks ago which would be 1/11/09. The withdrawal has been the hardest I have ever had to come off of with Effexor and Cimbalta in my past experiences.
The first 5 days were the worst. I had severe nausea (throwing up, diahrrea, could not eat), itching, and of course could not sleep. After 5 days the nausea and itching went away, but the insomnia remained.
I have been off the drug completely for 3 weeks and have not gotten more than 2 hours of sleep at night. This would be night 22 and I am still awake at 2 am. I have tried EVERYTHING to get to sleep. I finally looked up the term rebound insomnia and found that this is what is the problem. I read that it is something that I will get over in three weeks time (now). But, in rare cases, it could last longer. There is nothing that can get this to go away unless you take another sleeping pill to help with sleep. I don't have insurance, so I can't see a doctor about it so I don't have any option but to wait it out.
I seriously would consider going on this drug if this is the first time you are going to use it. If you are going to get off of it, you will suffer some discomfort no matter how much you wean yourself off of it. I wish that doctors would share the negatives of this drug before giving it to patients. When I got off of it, my mom said it was like having her daughter back. Seroquel is not a drug to take lightly.

I'm on 1500mg. I got used to most of the side effects like dry mouth and light sedation, but the hand shakes are more difficult to get used to. I have to tell people that I'm on medication to explain why I'm shaking. On a different note, Lithium has greatly affected my alcohol tolerance, and if I don't take it every night and morning I get huge hangovers.

my 8 yr old son is on 1000ml daily. It does help him in certain areas such as calming down long enough to talk to him. Without it he went into rages and it was difficult to communicate with him on a calm level. But it is not approved for children and there are so many unanswered questions on the long term effects. This makes is difficult as a parent to make decisions like this that could potentially harm him later in life.

extremely sedating, mind numbing, takes away motivation, abdominal pain, tinnitus...

I was given this drug for psychotic mania after taking antidepressants for chronic pain. Got diagnosed with BP 1. I took it for many months and then slowly weened off. Side effects were brain fog, inability to concentrate or remember things, lack of motivation, sleepy all the time. I weened off when I started getting really bad upper right quadrant abdominal pain and also had diarrhea. It took months to get of off. Side effects of withdrawal were insomnia, hot and cold flashes, headaches, bad skin and acne, and a really bad case of tinnitus which still hasn't gone away even though I'm off this drug completely now. It was really hard to get off of and I wish I had never taken it.

I can't fall asleep until around 5-6am in the morning. I wake up every hour after I fall asleep and I can't sleep past noon. I am very tired. It's very depressing. I can hardly function and find myself just wanting to lay in bed all day. I have tried to exercise my rear off, I have tried everything, nothing works. I have read some other people's comments and some say that they haven't gotten sleep after 7 months. I got really sick 3 weeks ago and can't shake the cough and I am pretty sure it's because I can't get adequate rest. If anyone has any suggestions please email me!

I have posted multiple times in this forum. Unfortunately, this site doesn't have an edit option so I could add to my posts. So, please read above post and come back to this one when finished.
I am on month 5 of my withdrawal problems from Seroquel. I still can't sleep at night. I have tried everything. Even staying up 36 hours doesn't help. I don't have insurance and can't afford to see a doctor. I am in a living hell and don't know if I will ever get out. I strongly encourage people to find another alternative to this drug. It is not worth it. I think my brain is damaged forever.

Helps me sleep 8-10 hrs per night. Decreases anxiety. No problems with what it's being used for in my case.

Weight gain. Elevated Cholesterol??
|
|
I suffer from amphetamine induced psychosis. I've tried various meds, but Quetiapine just does the biz. I've been taking them now for 8-9 years (500mg per day) and enjoy a normal(?) life.
I did notice shortly after starting this med that I was starting to gain weight. I don't eat a lot, regularly skipping meals for 2 days at a time, but my weight has gone up from 63 to 80 kilos. A recent concern has been elevated cholesterol levels (6.8, up from 4.8). I've been looking into this and after reading several studies I find I'm not the only one concerned. I'm just watching this one, which is going to escalate over the coming months though I can't see a definite conclusion being drawn within the next couple of years.

After 14 years of trying find the right med combination for BPD, I finally got it right. I take 800mg of Tegretol and 200mg of Seroquel and I have never been more stable (for almost a year now - no episodes!). I used to take 50mg of Seroquel PRN for sleep, but I was prescribed a larger dose during a particularly nasty manic episode & it was awesome. I don't recommend particular meds for people b/c everyone is different & some things work better/worse for others - I leave prescribing to Psychiatrists. I work in mental health & I have seen this med work wonders for some of my guys too.
