It works to get rid of depression but the weight gain is terrible. I have been off of it for 3 years and I still haven't been able to get rid of the weight.

I was really happy with Paxil for awhile, but even when my waking life felt good and stable, I would have nightmares that I had relapsed, broken down, and publicly rejected for my "abnormal" behavior, would wake breathless and covered in sweat, the sheets soaked & freezing in the predawn....unable to shake the horrible ache of pain, shame, and anxiety from my nightmares. My mom read Paxil interferes with insulin regulation and I just read smoking cigs counteracts paxil's antidepressant influence...so I quit cigs and now I face the daunting task of withdrawing from Paxil to try something new...whoopeee

Several Side Effects
I hated this medication. Paxil was given to me for my OCD and it did absolutely nothing for me. I took it for approximately 3 weeks and I just felt so sick and dizzy and tired all the time. I also encountered brutal headaches with this medication. I was taken off it immediately by my Family Doctor due to the severity of the side effects that I was having. I would not recommend this medication to anyone.

Paxil is the medication that I've been on the longest. I started taking it when I was 6 years old, but I had to stop taking it when I was 14 years old because the FDA released the warning about anti-depressants causing bad thoughts in teens and young adults. I was prescribed Paxil because I was diagnosed with Social Anxiety at the age of 6. But Paxil (like Celexa) is one of the best medications I've ever taken.

Bad withdrawl affects

Generic paxil worked wonders for my generalized anxiety disorder. my panic attack had gotten so bad that i refused or was unable to go to work for several days and lost my job. The side effects sucked but that can be expected with any of these meds. I see many people posting on here how horrible it is or was but for me it was great the only reason i ever stopped was lack of health insurance and financial reasons. The withdrawls were horrible but after being off now for close to a month I am beginning to feel much better and the zaps are finally almost completely gone. I have had some issues with anger and rage and im hoping that in time those feelings will subside. i would say give it a try it worked well for me with minimal side effects def not a horror story here. I see a lot of those on the web and thought itd be nice to see a post that was normal. I had the normal side effects of starting and stopping and it worked very well.

I've been on Paxil CR 25mg for 6 months for anxiety and the depression from bipolar (I take something else for the mania). Anyway for the first two months I had my life back and my social anxiety diminished alot. After that things kind of dropped off. I pretty much lost most of my emotion and I often felt like a zombie. I would sporadically have my highs and low-lows. I pretty much quit caring about anything and everything. I became various disorganized and my home became very messy. I pretty much quit cleaning and organizing things including dishes. Before I was a meticulous neat freak that was constantly cleaning and organizing every little thing. I quit bathing, brushing my teeth, and even putting on deodorant. Very unusual for me. My grades also dropped in school, which is upsetting because I had a 4.0 GPA before. I even had to drop some classes for the first time in my college career. I now have to take a nap everyday because I am so tired. Also, I have been losing track of time! I never did these things even when I was depressed with no medications! My social anxiety has come back fully! I also get brain shocks and migraines if I accidentally miss a dose. I would not recommend this medication to anyone based on my experience. I am trying to get off but it has been hell!

Effective at first. Then it flatlines your personality. Life begins to be Groundhog day. A re-run. Nor real highs or lows. It seems to swallow your emotions. An unnatural existence. But it did help curb my monstrous panic attacks.

I started Paxil in August 2009 for my anxiety. First I took 10mg, then 15. My anxiety still is not reduced as much as I'd like it to be. My doctor will probably increase my dose to 20mg, so hopefully I'll see some improvement after that.

For me, this drug has been a miracle. I was diagnosed recently with PMDD, and was suffering from horrendous mood swings, terrible social anxiety, paranoia, angry outbursts, crying jags, and everything else under the sun for half my menstrual cycle. The very day after I started on 10mg, I felt completely different. At first, it was a bit like my emotions were blunted, but it was such a relief. That lasted about a week, along with very mild nausea and decreased libido. I had one final day of combined nausea and a funny taste in my mouth, and then it completely evened out. The nausea went away, and my libido returned. Now I feel pleasantly calm, and am able to laugh and cry normally like I remember doing before the PMDD started getting bad. I actually enjoy the vivid dreams, but I can see where someone else might not. I haven't noticed any weight gain, and it doesn't make me crave alcohol, so I've been lucky there.NOTE: I take my dose about an hour before I sleep, which probably helps with any drowsiness it might cause.

Paxil made me less depressed because I didn't feel anything. No joy, no happiness, no sadness. I felt tired and yawned constantly, sometimes one yawn after another all thru the day. I noticed the constant yawning especially at work where it bothered my coworkers. I gained forty pounds in two months. I was just on the couch after work. It did make me less irritable, but it was impossible to live a full life with this meds. Thumbs down.

Horrible night sweats that would soak the entire bed, wild vivid dreams, and the worst of all was that it caused me to snap uncontrollably. Never had a problem with anger or temper in my life until I started taking it and now believe it has altered my temperment permenantly.

This is an extremely effective medication for depression but it also comes with a host of side effects. I gained nearly 40 lbs within 4 months of starting on it, felt quite tired during the day sometimes, and had seriously reduced sexual desires and performance. However, nothing has ever worked so well for depression in my entire life and I am very grateful to have found Paxil--it has truly changed my life. I am now taking Wellbutrin in addition to Paxil in order to manage the side effects.

This is a drug that I can't live without, due to my depression & anxiety. I first started paroxetine in 2005 after my Father passed away. It worked so good for me. I was able to go back to school, function again, the lethargy disappeared, I had so much energy I never had before & the crying episodes stopped. I discontinued Paxil 3 months ago just to give my body a rest from it. Everything was fine, the depression did not return, but I became very emotional. I didn't think I would have to return on it until I broke up with my husband. I just filed for divorce & became severly depressed again & just started taking 20 mg Paxil 2 days ago. The cyring episodes aren't as severe & not feeling as depressed. I need to know how long it will be for it to take effect, not the full effect, just in effect?

First!!! Becareful. It increased my consumption of alcohol- I would crave it. My doctor now admitted to me that it can do that. I would black out. I never drank before and now that I am off it- I dont drink. I don't recommend this!! I heard its one of the best of its kind for treatment. But there are other options. I took it for three years. I gained 50 pounds, developed sleep apnea. It did not help with my depression, and caused more mood swings, I was always agitated. My social anxiety increased. Basically it made things worse! Then my mistake was stopping it, "cold-turkey". I went through severe withdrawals. Then I developed severe anxiety along with panic attacks, of which I am now trying to deal with.

got rid of depression and panic attacks at 25mg
CONS:
unfortunately I am bipolar II (although this was not diagnosed at the time) and so the paxil sent me into total angry mania. And when I stopped taking it - that was a whole different pandora's box.
I was actually on the generic form. I knew when I went to the doctor to get treatment for panic attacks that I was possibly bipolar but I am still very young (17) and my mother keeps insisting its only mood swings. So I took the paxil and I was no longer depressed and after they bumped me to 25mg I didnt have any panic attacks anymore. I was experiencing total angry mania 24/7 I even moved out of my house for no apparent reason (in hindsight). I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS IF YOU ARE BIPOLAR. It was total hell. My doctor wouldn't listen to me and wanted me to take more so I just stopped taking it instead of tapering off - which was AWFUL. I felt like I was having a bad trip without the visuals. My skins felt like it was crawling and I got the sensation of being pounded by "bad vibes". I couldnt concentrate at all, I would start crying in the middle of class out of frustration, and I had some odd flu-like symptoms (known as "paxil-flu"). All of this lasted about 2 weeks - it was so bad I barely went to any work or school. After the worst subsided I plummeted into a really terrible depression.
I hate paxil with a passion and I wouldnt take it again if you paid me a million bucks.

It was difficult finding this community of Paxil users. I see the last posting was in December but I hope I can encourage more people to write about their experiences. I am in my early 50's and have used other anti-depressants in the past, mostly for PMS. I was prescribed Paxil because I was experiencing depression after two surgeries last year. I decided to stop the medication for the New Year as my life and health seemed to be in balance. Of course, that was until last night. I didn't realize one should wean off of Paxil very slowly, my doctor did not tell me this.... she is a OBGYN. I had been off Paxil for 3 days when I started to feel disoriented at work. Last night I became weepy and anxious. I could not sleep so I took an Ambien. When I woke up and tried to get ready for work, I started to get chills and my body ached. I didn't go to work and slept until noon. When I finally got up, I would start to do things ~ like make coffee ~ and walk away from it unfinished. By 4 this afternoon, I became weepy and felt like I was losing my mind. It was frightening, not to have control over one's thoughts and actions. I couldn't remember what I was doing and the voices of my neighbors talking sounded strange to me. I took a half of a tablet (10 MG) and feel much better. Now I have been scouring the internet and found information about Paxil that scares me. I, too, have surges in my head that feels like mild electric currents. I have had ringing in ears as well. I joined this community tonight because I want to share my experience. Thank you for sharing yours. All of you have given me an insight to the battle I am up against trying to get off Paxil. If I had only known how evil the withdrawals would be, I would have never taken it. Paxil worked well when I needed it during my depression but the withdrawals are not worth it.

I found that plan ole' paxil speed me up and boosted my mood for about 8 hrs, then I dropped agian. I have found that a low dose of Paxil CR with my mood stabilizers has been beneficial. Consider taking the slow release form, if you have anxiety. I became more anxious during those 8 hrs when I was taking plan ole' paxil

This did not help my depression, but it did help slightly with my anxiety. I did not continue the treatment because my anxiety id not daily and I mainly wanted it for depression. Side effects were minimal for me. If you suffer from anxiety daily and depression, this might be a good place for you to start.

Paxil has some side effects but I've found it effective for helping me manage both anxiety and depression. I've come to accept the fact that no pill is going to completely "fix" my anxiety and depression but at least with Paxil I can manage. And manage is good enough. I recently tried life without meds and found the anxiety and depression was too much to tolerate. I tried Wellbutrin at the urging of my doctor but it didn't work for me. Now I'm back on Paxil and life is beginning to be enjoyable again. When I was off Paxil, the depression/anxiety and my desperation for relief was getting really scary. Thankfully, things are returning to normal again after a few weeks back on Paxil. The relief is well worth the price of the side effects.

Antidepressant properties are solid. It works well.I generally only get one side effect from antidepressants: no matter which one it is, if it demonstrates even the smallest possibility of causing sexual side effects then I'm going to be the person who has problems with it.Catch 22.

great antidrepressant, keeps anxiety down, very little side effects
CONS:

weight gain, mainly

I see this antidepressant has a low rating, but to me it is one of the best there is. Since all SSRIs cause weight gain, that's just the price of not being depressed.

I took paxil and had to take ambien while i was on it, i'm bi-polar so it made my mania's so bad i couldn't even deal with it, then when i tried to come off it it hurt my head REALLY REALLY bad, took a week to wean off! The docs tried to give it to me again when i went into the hospital, they wouldn't let me go home till i did cuz so i took the 1 pill there and when my husband got me home i refused to let him fill the perscription. I suggest lexapro.

eliiminated panic attacks, easier to socialize
CONS:

mania, agitation, aggressiveness, outbursts of temper, sleeplessness, strange electrical shocks during withdrawal

I'm bipolar with a tendency toward dysphoric mania. I also have GAD, social phobia and get PAs. I took this along with 4mg/day of xanax for a few months several years ago during my pdoc's SSRI phase (we also tried Wellbutrin, which didn't work for me in the long run either). I liked Paxil at first. I felt more comfortable around people and didn't get PAs. But after a few months (I lasted longer on this than on Wellbutrin) I started becoming more and more angry-manic, pissed off all the time and picking fights with everyone. And sleep? Forget it. Also, for about 3 weeks after stopping Paxil I would occasionally get odd "electrical shock" feelings. Beware of SSRIs if your bipolar disorder scews towards mania. It might work well for depressives or social phobics who aren't also manic but my pdoc gets a 1 for prescribing this for a mostly-manic patient!

severe diarrhea, nausea, shaking, confusion, dehydration

I had a horrible reaction to Paxil. I took one 20mg tablet and within a few hours I started feeling extremely nauseous and shaky. I went to bed and woke up a few hours later feeling much worse. I was nauseous and had severe diarrhea (just bile) for the next 10 hours. I was shaking and confused. I passed out at one point and didn't have the strength to pull myself up off the floor. My vision was blurred and my head was spinning and I couldn't control my shaking. I remember feeling like I was dying and wanted to call 911 but didn't have the strength to reach the phone. I ended up in hospital for dehydration and was in bed feeling nauseous and shaky for 6 days afterwards. Paxil scared me. It was more than a year before I was willing to try another drug for my anxiety. I eventually started taking Celexa and that worked well for me with minimal side effects.

I was originally diagnosed w/ post-partum depression 5 yrs ago and was put on Paxil. Have since been diagnosed with chronic depression, insomnia, and social phobia. A few different docs have tried to change me along the way, and had me try: Wellbutrin (hated it), Effexor (hated it), Prozac (made me mad), Zoloft (didn't work), Trazadone (he** no!), Xanax (loved it a little too much), and just today put me on 20 mg Elavil along w/ my current 40 mg Paxil. Paxil has always been my fall-back drug; I'm relaxed, patient, somber, social and less emotional when I take it. I'm willing to accept the side effects in exchange for the way I'm able to handle life and am just able to live.

Great for Depression, and obsessive thoughts

Muscle spasms
I liked this medication for as long as I could take it. Eventually I had to stop or never be able to lay down and rest. Everytime I almost entered into a deep sleep I had restless legs and then the rest of my body would start into muscle spasms. It was the best me I have ever had for my depression, but it was not the right one for me. I will rate this at a 5 in the aspect it was the best antidepressent I had been on, but i would have to say a 0 in regards for me ever taking it again. Eventually The Muscle Spasam begain in daytime. Blessings Graydove

Effective, generic!

CONS:

amnesia, feeling dependent, withdrawal difficulties, low libido
I was on this for about 8 years straight and I'm practically amnesic to the little details of those years. I started to feel dependent on it after awhile and when I withdrew off of it, felt like I was in a bubble, losing my mind. It also killed my libido. On the plus side, i was agoraphobic and homebound and this drug gave me the ability to leave my house again. It also completely ceased my irritable bowel symptoms. For those reasons alone, I would still recommend it to people, even tho the side effects are rampant.

Headaches, clouded thinking, difficult to quit.

This is an awful medication. I would not recommend it. I am still suffering the residual side effects from trying to stop taking the drug. The rebound effect when quitting caused me to become very suicidal.

Helps control the "downs"

CONS:

Brings on more "ups", headaches

Works really well for keeping panic at bay, but tends to enourage more manic episodes in those like me, with bipolar problems. It is probably the best treatment I've had though, since I am being treating for more than one disorder...it helps keep me on an even keel. Headaches are a problem when getting used to it.

I loved paxil. It made me not get upset at day to day things
CONS:

my psychiatrist took me off when he "discovered" I was hypo-manic. He then put me on Depakote, Buspar, Remeron, Melleril and something else I can't remember
I had medical insurance at the time I took it, so I only had to pay a small co-pay, like $20.The only negative side effect I had was sexual.

This stuff is garbage. I can't believe pdoc's even prescribe this crap to people. I have been on a few med's in my history and this one was the worst, wellbutrin being the second worst. I ended up be nausous, light headed/dizzy, hallucinations, had real bad diarrhea (I was a human espresso machine, brewing up non-stop butt coffee), bad headaches, and just felt hopeless.

My experience with Paxil was awful. I had terrible diarrhea contstantly for as long as I was taking it. I realize I may be unique in that but still, I had to stop taking it within a week.

Gave me anxiety attacks!
Took for depression. I never experienced an anxiety attack UNTIL I started taking this medication.Did not help me at all. As a matter of fact, I continue to experience high anxiety ever since taking this med. I have noticed, though, that since I began having anxiety attacks, I no longer get migraines. Weird, eh?Friends that have been on this med have had positive experiences and worked well for them. It just wasn't for me.
