The generic is fabulous for my anxiety and depression. The only issue I have is sleepiness (although the brand name gave me insomnia), so I've been trying it out at different times of day to find a way that doesn't make me quite so sleepy during the day. This is the best med I've tried, so I really hope to make it work.

This may be a very good medication for depression alone. I was treated with Lexepro after being misdiagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. Contraindicated for treatment alone for people with Bipolar Disorder, which is my correct diagnosis, discovered after taking this medication.

really helped control swings in anxiety and depression and brought both down a lot

CONS:

a really wild ride in the beginning
I felt like I was riding a rocket without a guidance system in beginning, but once that calmed down it has been a wonderful basis for my cocktail. I did have pretty nasty headaches in the beginning, but I find that with about all of my medications in the beginning. I have been on a 20mg from the beginning and have been with it for about four months.
It has been very helpful and shows no sign of decreased efficacy.

addressed my sexual fetish
CONS:
causes lack of focus, sleepiness, lack of motivation
This happened really unexpectedly: while I do have a harder time achieving orgasm on Lexapro, it treats my fetish. I usually need to fantasize very precisely about or see images of my fetish to have an orgasm and it often detracts from being with my partner, but on Lexapro I am aroused by a range of sexual stimuli. It's really pretty amazing and strangely wonderful not to be bound by that fetish that I have hated my entire life.
What sucks, however, is that on all other ADs, I am usually really "on", remember things well and function at a high level intellectually. On Lexapro, I have a hard time focusing, I loose my train of thought, and I generally feel out of it. So perhaps, combining Lexapro with Wellbturin might be the answer for me.

first AD i've tried. Hit bottom and had major depression and GAD...couldn't leave the house, suicidal thoughts, felt like I was in hell! Prescribed Lex by psych, started at 5mg for 3 days, then up to 10mg. 6 weeks in, and it's working great for me! Felt a change in the first week, and just kept getting better; on week 6 now and I feel like I have my life back. A true game-saver and life-saver for me!!

It helps control bipolar and depression.

CONS:

The side effects are awful and very potent.

When I started out on it, there weren't any side effects, but it didn't help my bipolar either. Then after about 4 weeks, it started making me very, very sleepy, to where I would fall asleep at school, in the shower, all sorts of awkward places. And it also made me very hungry, to where I couldn't control my eating. At one point I gained 10 pounds in one month from it. It never really helped my bipolar at all, and the side effects made it even less worth it to take the medicine.

My Mother committed suicide on this medication. I was prescribed it before this happened to my mother and I attempted suicide. I did not know my Mother was taking it. I don't know why a doctor would prescribe someone diagnosed with bi-polar lexapro. Also. while I was taking it my mood, depression, just everything was terrible. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone!

completely took away my ability to achieve orgasm with very first dose, sleepiness

Started on 10mg dose. I am having difficulty rating the product overall because it may have worked, but I only took it for 6 days. With the very first dose, I was completely unable to have orgasms (no matter what). I never had trouble with this before. I was also very sleepy - felt as if I'd taken a sedative. I never even got to the point where it may have helped my depression. The orgasm issue (for women) is apparently very rare, but, lucky me, I had it happen and ever since I went off of it the orgasms I do manage to have are MUCH weaker (about 1/2 the intensity, if that). It may have ruined me forever. No thanks!

Lexapro never helped my depression, and I took it for one year. I had no idea I had bipolar disorder until I took Lexapro and it eventually sent me spinning off into a severe, prolonged mixed state. When it was time to discontinue, I got very sick with nausea, headaches, increased anxiety, sweating, and "brain zaps" that seemed to shock my brain every few seconds--for weeks.

I have been on numerous antidepressants and have found this one to be excellent. When the psych doctor first perscribed it for me I was put on the highest dose which is 20mg and largatil with sleeping tablets as well,as I was suicidal so I slept most of the time but after 6 weeks I was able to go off the largatil and sleeping tablets but remain on the lexapro at 20mg. I have gained some weight and my eyesight is not good Im not sure if that has anything to do with this drug. My partner gets upset with me due to my lack of sexual drive, but he is very patient and tolerant of my moods. I keep active and work parttime so for me this drug has been ideal in stabilizing my mood.

Lexapro is one of those medications where you start to feel side-effects because the amount of medication in your system is fluctuating, and when it's lower you go into mini-withdrawals (for me this meant light-headedness and nausea). Advice: ALWAYS take it at the same time every day. And, if your doctor is at all OK with it, split your dose so you take the daily amount over several doses during the day--that way the amount stays even. It took me two months to taper off the medication. Plan on taking that long and feeling a little under the weather while you're doing it. Taper off really slowly. My doctor said there wouldn't be withdrawal symptoms... Me on the floor half-conscious begs to differ! So go slowly, split your pills if you have to, let your system adjust.

Doctor just prescribed me 1 10mg tablet every night..although many people have told me that their acne flares up pretty bad when taken daily..so i was wondering if it was ok to only take when im anxious because some days i feel perfectly normal, but then others i feel like i need to take something...so i wanted to know if i can take it when i feel i need it and also if the acne side effects will still kick in if i take it like that?? please any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

I have nothing to say concerning cost since my insurance covers it.It's helped me concerning my depression, it's kept me feeling good about myself and life pretty much. It's really really helped me out of a deep slump I found myself in.But if you're going to be put on this or are concerning it, your libido is probably going to die. I haven't had a sex drive at all since I was put on it and I find it almost impossible to have an orgasm.Other than that, I always find myself figeting, getting jittery, irritated easily, and impatient, and that's not really normal for me at all. I used to not talk a lot and loved listening, now I can't stand listening and I always need to be talking. Sometimes I find it hard to pay attention to what someone's saying or even to what I'm reading because I get so side tracked and twitchy. It's fine to me though, it's pulled me out of the depression I was in and I've been feeling better than ever. Sober and self-injury free.

Worked great fot treating anxiety. The difference between Lexapro and a benzo is that with Lexapro you feel normal compared to feeling high with a benzo. No side effects at all for me. I would recommend anyone who is prescribed Lexapro for any reason to seek ot counseling. Therapy with the combination of Lexapro proves high success regardless of diagnosis.

Definitely stabilized my mood, but stabilized it so much that I couldn't feel any moods. It reduced my sexual desires almost to nonexistent... but I didn't feel anxiety... or anything... at all.

Started taking for depression and anxiety about 2 months ago. Started on 5MG a day and up to 10MG per day now. Have not really noticed an improvement as of yet. 2 months in I should. It makes me super tired and is not what I thought it would be. I need something that gets my mood elevated and my energy up.

I'm bipolar II (and then some) and take wellbutrin xl and lamictal. I had a slight down turn a few weeks ago. My anxiety kicked up and mood went down. My unreal thoughts of impending danger and things overwhelmed me, and I had frequent episodes of crying for no reason. Sooo, my doc gave me lexapro. Within days there was a change in my thoughts and mood. BUT I became lethargic and all I wanted to do was sleep a little longer, and take naps. I'd wake up in the morning eat breakfast (if i was up long enough), then go back to sleep, eat lunch, take a nap. Then I would lay down after dinner, and fall asleep early. My 6 yr old was having to make his own breakfast, since mommy was sleeping again. Then my fiancé, who I live with, became upset since I had absolutely no want/need/thought of being intimate. I avoided the situation, but it made me sad, to make him feel rejected. Three weeks later...I stopped taking it Sunday. Today is Tuesday, and I AM AWAKE! I got up this morning, and stayed up, was active and alert! I'm just hoping that I got out of my rut. We'll see. Long story short, I'm not taking lexapro EVER AGAIN!

Before this med, I had horrible nightmares and anxiety. Once on Lexapro the nightmares went away and I had less anxiety. Although it caused me to be tired. I then started to have thoughts of suicide (which I never had before) and started cutting. It relieved one problem but caused another (more serious).

I have been on Lexapro for over 3 years now as part treatment for major depression, OCD, and severe anxiety. After 10+ years of trying one SSRI after another, my experience with Lexapro (20mg) has been very well tolerated. I am on other medications for OCD and anxiety as well as migraines. The only side effect worth noting is the loss of interest in sex, which can also be attributed to other causes. As with any med, what works for one person may be a hellish experience for another so patience is key.

I was on this 2-3yrs ago and it was a high dose so I had allot of side effects. The biggest was lack of any sexual function or want. As a guy you tend to feel very useless. This time I'm on a low dose and don't really feel any of the effects from before which I'm happy about but now I'm single (was not before)............I think Ill just concentrate on my health. Lexapro is working for me so I hope it can work for others.

made me feel better

had to up it to 40 mg and take with wellbutrin

I feel like this has worked pretty well for me, but it has been most effective with it combined with the Wellbutrin. I have been on it for 3 years. I originally had problems with it making me very nauseous. It has gotten better with time, and is obviously not bad enough for me to quit taking it.

First AD I ever took... Went up to 20mg, and then it essentially stopped working for me... Good drug overall, with only some minor side effects going on/coming off of it.

Started taking lexapro in november after years of depression. within a month i saw about a 50% increase in my mood. i also couldnt sleep after i started taking it. dr prescribed trazadone to help with the insomnia and to better my mood further. now im at about 75% in terms of my mood. Before lexapro i was a regular cutter but i havent cut since i started taking it. I actually felt better within 2 weeks of taking it.

I was only Lexapro for about a week. It made me feel extremely off. I didn't know what to do with myself. I was shaky, felt like my eyes were rolling around in my head. Also, I already have a heart condition and this drug made my heart rate skyrocket. I felt like I was going to die.

Helped a little bit with depression and anxiety.
CONS:

Increased sweating, Increased appetite (even though it isn't a listed side-affect)

I was on Effexor XR for 3 1/2 years before switching to Lexapro. The Effexor was no longer working for me, but I found that the Lexapro has taken a long time to take affect (nearly 2 months) as opposed to Effexor, which only took a week. Even though Lexapro works better for me than the Effexor did at the end, it is not making a sufficient enough difference for me to continue taking it.

Relieves depression without feeling weird
CONS:
Really reduced libido, the worst withdrawal I can imagine.
I love how this drug treated my depression. I felt lighter, more grounded, and less quick to get anxious and panicky in everyday situations. Because it decreased my sexual desire so much, my doctor added Wellbutrin to the mix to try to counteract that side effect. Since that combo did not solve the problem, I have stopped Lexapro and am now on Wellbutrin alone. It has taken almost 4 months for the withdrawal effects such as zaps in my head, and my eyes working slowly, to go away. However, to treat my depression it was great.

PROS:

Less crying
CONS:
Emotionally "flat", weight gain?, difficult adjustment period
I take this drug together with Wellbutrin. I don't like it because, like most SSRIs I've taken, it kind of flattens out my mood. I don't cry as much (good) but I also am not really ever happy. My friends point out that I "never laugh"...which is okay, because I have kind of a dry sense of humor, but it's also a little weird! I also don't have uncontrollable crying jags in, say, the baking aisle of the grocery store. So I guess it's a trade-off. My shrink made the interesting observation that when you take Lexapro and Wellbutrin, Lex affects your affect and Well affects your agency. I think that's true for me. Lex improved my mood but didn't motivate me to do anything. (I was still lethargic.)Also, as haleyshea notes above, when I first started it I stopped eating for two weeks (literally, stopped eating. I drank two tins of slimfast a day and ate like four carrots.) I was afraid of food. (weight/body issues). Then I got very suicidal and checked myself into a hotel for a week where I did nothing but watch bad TV and write. I knew it was that typical drug-start-up suicidality thing, but it sucks a lot to go through.

SUICIDE ATTEMPT

This medicine did the exact opposite from what it was supposed to. My anxiety and depression increased tenfold and it also caused me slight paranoia. It got so bad that I tried to kill myself.I would not recommend this treatment to anyone, and if you're on it please be careful and stop taking it if your depression worsens.

Felt lively and less depressed

CONS:

increased anxiety, physical agitation, personality shift, paranoia

Lexapro started out pretty good for my depression. It made me feel alive again until after about a month when it started to make things worse. I got really anxious and paranoid and was becoming a person i didn't like. It made me feel nauseous and physically agitated in general.

Helped me overcome agoraphobia, and decent with general anxiety.
CONS:

Pooped out too quickly. Sexual side effects.
I am happy Lexapro helped me to overcome agoraphobia. I am upset that it kept "pooping out" so fast. I started on 5 mg, within a few weeks, was up to 10 mg, within a few weeks was up to 20 mg, now I am weaning off it, so I can start on something new. It initially was great, but for me, simply quit working quickly. Everyone is different, but I personally do not like this drug. The sexual side effects are HORRIBLE. It makes having an orgasm so tough.
