Also known as Depramil in some countries.

What is Celexa?

Celexa is in a class of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Celexa tablets and oral solution are used to treat depression. It may also be used to treat other conditions, as prescribed by your doctor.

Who Should Not Take Celexa?

Never take Celexa if you are taking another drug used to treat depression, called a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), or if you have stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days. Taking Celexa close in time to an MAOI can result in serious, sometimes fatal, reactions, including:

  • High body temperature
  • Coma
  • Seizures (convulsions)

MAOI drugs include Nardil (phenelzine sulfate), Parnate (tranylcypromine sulfate), Marplan (isocarboxazid), and other brands.

Common Side Effects

The most commonly experienced side effects include: insomnia, somnolence and/or nausea. Additional side effects you may experience include dry mouth, vomiting, dizziness, agitation and asthenia.

What Are The Risks?

The following are the major potential risks and side effects of Celexa therapy. However, this list is not complete.

  • Possible life-threatening serotonin syndrome when used with triptan medicines: See FDA Alert [07/2006] above.
  • Infant persistent pulmonary hypertension: See FDA Alert [07/2006] above.
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions:Persons taking Celexa may be more likely to think about killing themselves or actually try to do so, especially when Celexa is first started or he dose is changed. People close to persons taking Celexa can help by paying attention to changes in user’s moods or actions. Contact your healthcare professional right away if someone using Celexa talks about or shows signs of killing him or herself. If you are taking Celexa yourself and you start thinking about killing yourself, tell your healthcare professional about this side effect right away.
  • Stopping Celexa: Do not stop taking Celexa suddenly because you could get side effects. Your healthcare professional will slowly decrease your dose.
  • Bleeding problems: Celexa may cause bleeding problems, especially if taken with aspirin, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen), or other drugs that affect bleeding.
  • Mania: You may become unusually hyperactive, excitable or elated.
  • Seizures: You may experience a seizure (convulsion), even if you are not taking Celexa close in time with an MAOI.
  • Pregnancy: Tell your healthcare professional if you are or may be pregnant (see FDA Alert [07/2006] above). In addition to the issue described in the alert, babies delivered to mothers taking Celexa late in pregnancy have developed problems, such as difficulty breathing and feeding.
  • Sexual problems: You may have problems with impotence (erectile dysfunction), abnormal ejaculation, difficulty reaching orgasm, or decreased libido (sexual desire).
  • Other side effects include dry mouth, nausea, and sleepiness.
  • Tell your healthcare professional about all your medical conditions, especially liver or kidney disease. Tell your healthcare professional if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed your baby.

Are There Any Interactions With Drugs or Foods?

  • Do not take Celexa with Lexapro (escitalopram), another drug used to treat depression, because they are very similar and you could get an overdose.
  • Celexa may interact with medicines other than the ones already mentioned in this information sheet. These interactions can cause serious side effects. Tell your healthcare professional about all medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you take.
  • If you plan to drink alcohol, talk to your healthcare professional.

How Do I Take Celexa?

Celexa is taken by mouth, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional.

Special Precautions

Avoid abrupt discontinuation of this medication.

PROS: people said i seemed more stable
CONS: initially worsened panic attacks, then didn't seem to do a lot. On higher doses I would sleep nearly all day. Killed my boyfriend's libido.

Both me and my boyfriend have been on this. For me I didn't feel much of a difference and he lost his libido but seemed a little calmer. I went up to 60mg as lower doses weren't doing much, and then became very drowsy and numb.

PROS: It was small and not hard to swallow.
CONS: I was more anxious than usual on this medication.

This was my first antidepressant that I was prescribed when I was freshly diagnosed. I was more anxious than usual on this product and my level of depression stayed the same. I know everyone reacts differently to medication based on the chemistry of their body, but I have met others with the same side effects on this product. I would not recommend.

PROS: no drowsiness, cheap
CONS: have to be on highest dose

Worked much better than lexapro. Lexapro made me tired, and celexa (citalopram) did not. The drawback is that I'm on the highest dose (60mg, and some pdocs don't even prescribe that high) and I would like if it worked even better. It stops the panic attacks though, but I still get some mild depression.

PROS: none
CONS: it doesn't seem to do anything for me

I have been on 20mg for 2 years, am still depressed and can't sleep...I had bad side effects on prozac, so I guess this is better than that...will be asking my psych for something else.

PROS: It works to relieve depression (in my case, when combined with Wellbutrin)
CONS: Weight gain – though possible to lose weight while on this product.

Priced based on using generic brand. I would probably be dead if I hadn't gotten on an anti-depressant – this is the one I decided I would try, and it works great, though I had to add Wellbutrin to get to feeling completely 'normal'.

PROS: i have been on this alot over the years and it does help on certin aspects. if i did not take it regular and took it only when i know that i had to deal with court or something like that i was fine
CONS: after 6 months of taking it regular it stoped working for me.

most of my life I have been a guni pig for anti depreseant medications but this was one of them that helped but only for a short period of time. like I said earlier . if I took it every day I would be fine then 6months later it would stop working and then I would stop for 2 weeks and then like if I knew the next day I had to go to court I would take it the night before and it would help. I have tried it taking it during the day and it made me sick and flip out. but taking it at night was fine. now the cost of medications alone are ridiculous I bearly can come up with $5 to feed my self how am I sapose to come up with $100 or more for my medication? lower the price to $5 a bottle and you will work with the people. now I have found new medication that works for me.

PROS: I feel better overall. I find that I can control my worry more.I sleep better too.
CONS: It takes along time for me to wake up and my appetite has increased.

I was prescribed 10 mg/a day. I take it at night before I got to bed. It really helps me sleep. I feel a lot calmer during the day. I have been on it for a month now and I see a big difference in my mood. I do feel more tired than usual when I wake up. But as the day goes on I feel good.

PROS: no suicidal thoughts no more self-harm reduced anxiety
CONS: no motivation loss of creativity numb feeling

It took about three weeks to really start working, and it's true I didn't feel like crying constantly anymore and no longer hurt myself but it also made me feel numb. It was like i was on the sad end of the scale before and the citalopram brought me to the middle so than the scale didn't tip in either direction. It wasn't terrible but my lack of motivation made it difficult at school.

PROS: Totally got rid of my depression at 20mg.
CONS: Made me very suicidal at first, induced mania when increased to 30mg.

Before being diagnosed with BD1 I had been diagnosed with Depression. When I took Celexa at 20mg QD I was happy, more outgoing, had a normal sleep cycle, and was just, well, not depressed. However my dose was raised and it induced a horrible manic episode that put me in the hospital. We thought it was a drug-induced mania but after being off of it for 4 months I had another manic episode which is when we realized I was having depressive episodes, not depression. It definitely would have been a great medication had I had depression. I would definitely recommend to anyone who definitely, 100% has depression!

PROS: No real benefit
CONS: No real benefit

Tried this at 20mg and 30 mg and unfortunately had no real effect for me. Gave me bad headaches though and I yawned a lot. Coming off not too bad but headaches worse than ever

PROS: has really helped my anxiety disorder and in turn my depression too
CONS:

Fortunately I've had no side effects! And overall I've noticed that my anxiety disorder is more in control (note: I'm also in counseling!) - within two weeks Celexa had helped remove the "panic" portion of my disorder so I could actually leave my dorm without fear of panic attacks. I'm counting as especially impressive that this helped so much considering I started taking it just before a particularly stressful time in my life (I study in Boston and was around the bombings and the subsequent manhunt).

PROS: none
CONS: insomnia

I tried this for anxiety and depression, but it did absolutely nothing. I did have insomnia while on it, but most meds I've tried have given me insomnia so that's not unique to Celexa.

PROS: Completely stopped self-harm thoughts, has lifted a general fog
CONS: constipation, excessive yawning, insomnia

Best med I've been on so far. It's alleviated a lot of my depression. I don't have that weight bearing down on me anymore. I've had no outbursts of tears. There was insomnia, at first, until my doc made me change my meds to daytime instead of before bed. Increased appetite. At first I felt 'funny' and had unusual boughts of sweating. But that went away after a few weeks.

PROS: reduced social anxiety and depressive thoughts, reduced appetite
CONS: caused tinnitus, extreme drowsiness, changes in perception; failed to reduce suicidal ideation

I've been on 20 mg for about 2 months.Other cons: decreased inhibition (good for reducing social anxiety but not so good otherwise), palinopsia (persistent after-images). Altered perception is mainly lots of visual snow, having to do double-takes a lot because you saw something else the first time. Maybe some minor hallucinations like moving shadows. Weird dreams. Might have had a role in precipitating a dissociative episode. Tinnitus is a rarer side effect but I got it and I don't know if it's going to go away.Still, not a bad drug as far as antidepressants go. It didn't reduce my general anxiety as well as I'd hoped.

PROS: Mostly got rid of my depression.
CONS: Doesn't work as well for me as Lexapro.

I went from being severely depressed to merely being apathetic or even content some days. This is a great improvement for me. It also works well with my Risperdal. I'd recommend it to anyone who can't afford Lexapro.

PROS: able to stay calm, not crying, haven't lost my temper w/my 4 y/o
CONS: floating feeling

I've only been on this 2 days now but already today I could see a difference. I've been dealing with severe depression, panic attacks, and anger control issues. I've been suicidal and homicidal (wanting to kill my son), and when he had a tantrum today, I did really good. I didn't get angry (still got irritated), I did't yell at him or hurt him. I didn't cry. I am on 20mg/day. The only thing I really have noticed is feeling like i'm floating a bit. It's not enough to make me lose my balance, just weird feeling. Hopinig that this w/therapy will get me to being a better person and mother.

PROS: Evens the lows up and minimises the negative self-talk.
CONS: Slows down constructive thoughts and strange physical feelings.

At first became a bit manic, with some twitches, 'spastic' walking and spaceyness, confusion. Now hot at night, dry mouth, erratic sleep patterns, but this has saved my life by shutting down most negative thoughts, like peeling off a negative layer, exposing 'me', but only slight increased anxiety. Highly recommend this for MDD.

PROS: Celexa has really helped my depression.
CONS: I haven't had any side effects from Celexa and I have had side effects from a large number of psych drugs.

Celexa has changed my life. I suffer from bipolar depression (diagnosed 10 years ago) and have been on Celexa for about 2 years. I do not have side effects from the Celexa, which is great. For me it works better with a mood stablizer. Right now I am taking Saphris with it. Best mix of meds since I was diagnosed.

PROS:
CONS:

I was on Celexa for quite some time before my psychiatrist weaned me off of it. I wasn't taken off of it because of side effects or a bad reaction, instead I was taken off of it because I was no longer feeling its effects. I was on a high dosage, but I apparently just became so used to it that it stopped working for me. But overall, I would recommend Celexa to anyone else. In all honesty, it was actually one of the most effective medications I've been on, but I just became so used to it that it no longer worked for me.

PROS: sort of calming effect, rage subsided, easier to cope, more even-keel all around, not expensive
CONS: nothing yet (only 1 week into it)

well it is a week tonight that he started it and things are still awesome. not one blowout, no fights, no swearing that I heard at any bad drivers or anything else that used to grate his nerves. he is very pleased with the med, i'm very pleased with him, i'm sure his co-workers are very pleased too, he is not a zombie, he still gets a little mad when something goes wrong but he just deals with it and then its gone, no going over and over it for hours and hours..we are going to do some visiting this weekend so will see if the family & friends notice the difference (not telling anyone). So far Still So good!

PROS: Started acting fast, barely any side effects yet, so far so good!
CONS: None yet

significant other finally went and asked for help, been depressed somewhat I think for years, had big mood swings, held things in then freaked out after a few weeks, couldn't let things go from now or even the in past, had good days but even so everything still bothered him, etc etc. It was either get help or likely the end of a loving relationship. It was hard as he doesn't do medication, felt like there was something wrong with him for needing it, etc. Anyway, got it and started it this friday at 5pm,he was tired and had a very slight headache but not even bad enough to take a pill for. He seemed already calmer then! it was strange. the next day he was definitely calmer, people cutting us off in the car didn't even really fizz him-he just shook his head and that was it, it is Monday now and still the same thing, he said himself he still feels a bit annoyed when something happens, but then that's it and its over, he doesn't feel rage or he doesn't dwell on it. one other *small* side effect, apparently it can sometimes affect your sexual function, well in this case, so far it is helping out! before we had a great sex life but he had to, um concentrate more, take breaks if you know what I mean, now he has _staying power_ if you catch my drift so i have to say, so far, so great with this medication! will keep you posted as I found feedback was really helpful for us to ease our minds before he tried it. We are really positive so far about the generic brand of celexa so far for us!!

PROS: none
CONS: self-harm, suicidality, crying spells

I have been on many medications but this was by far the worst for me. While on Celexa (for 4 months) I began to have uncontrollable crying spells and a sense of overall hopelessness (even worst than depression with no medication). I started to act out at home and was constantly fighting with my mom whom I'm very close with. I nearly was kicked out of the house and I didn't care. I also began to practice self-mutilation. I would slice my arms and wrists with anything that I could find: knives, nails, saws, X-acto knifes, razor blades. I would even crack open safety razors I use for shaving to remove the blade to use for cutting. I would also beat my upper arms with my fist or a hammer. I know it sounds pretty intense and crazy! I would even fantasize about hanging myself with my belt. My psychiatrist refused to take me off of it so I went to another one who finally did. As soon as I was taken off all of the self-harm and fighting stopped and has not returned since

As soon as I was taken off all of the self-harm and fighting stopped and has not returned since!

PROS:
CONS: I've been on for 4 weeks, No change in depression.

I was on cymbalta for years, seemed to become ineffective. I've been dealing with depression for about 20 years, tried numerous meds, diagnosed with substance abuse when I tried to self medicate and I'm still not sure what will help.

PROS: None for me
CONS: Reacted badly to this med, may have been allergic reaction

Celexa made me really tired and drugged feeling. I also take Wellbutrin and because of situational depression the Celexa was added. I also take Klonopin occasionally as needed but never at the same time as any other meds. I am not a fan of this med but my experience may not be typical, not sure.

PROS: None yet
CONS: Tiredness, feeling "out of it" within 2 hours of taking it. (20mg)

Not seeing any changes and I have been taking it for almost two weeks. But on the first day I took the Celexa, (within a couple of hours) I was having continous waves of euphoria that lasted for about 30 minutes or so, which was strange but only happened the first day.I am taking Wellbutrin SR 150mg 2x's a day in addition to the Celexa.

PROS: None
CONS: Extreme anxiety, uncontrollable whole body rocking, spontaneous unexplainable hysterical crying fits

I was on this medication for four days and it made me crazy. My severe reaction to it scared my doctor, and she told me to just stop taking it completely. Within two days I was completely back to normal. I will likely not be trying Celexa again.

PROS:
CONS: nausea, increased depression and anxiety, light headed, insomnia

I only took citalopram for 2 weeks so I can't really say how it is long term, but personally, it was not good for me. I had worsening depression on 10 mg citalopram, terrible insomnia, anxiety/panic attacks I was also very irrational in my thinking and worrying a lot. I m going back to fluoxetine.

PROS: Helped me sleep, lessened the intense depression
CONS: Stopped working after a while

Overall this was a relatively good medication however the state of my health meant it ceased to work after a period of time.

PROS: So far so good - just started taking it.
CONS: Makes me feel agitated and afraid... of CATS.

I have extreme fear of CATS and not just big lion/tiger/lynx/puma type cats...ALL cats. Especially Siamese cats. I hate them with the essence of my being and I'm terrified if I even see one across the street. I have to run back into my house and pull the drapes because I'm afraid the cat will come across the street and try to get in the house. I tell them not to but then they visit me at night when I'm asleep. I can't shake them. So anyway, I'm hoping this new drug helps a lot. I can't tell yet because when I take it I get nervous and start thinking about the cats. I'll report back when I know more.

PROS: relieved overwhelming sadness/crying, where many others failed/had awful side-effects
CONS: only achieved this in maximum dose of 60mg daily

I've suffered with pretty severe depression since my late teens. After many trials with different anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds (alone and combinations), including Zoloft, Prozac, Buspar, Klonopin, Lexapro, Elavil, Celexa has by far been the best. When it seemed to start losing effectiveness at 60mg daily, adding Wellbutrin SR 300mg daily has been pretty effective. Overall, Celexa has been great!

PROS: Has calmed the intenseness of the anxiety, depression
CONS: So far, none.

Granted, I have only been taking Celexa for 6 days but it has already helped me tremendously. It has taken the intense edge off of the paralyzing anxiety and depression I was feeling. At least I am beginning to function again. I had been perscribed Prozac and Zoloft in the past for SAD and they did nothing at all. It was very discourageing. I hesitated trying something again but the depression was becoming very severe and affecting my life in a prolonged and negitive way. So far this has been a God-send. I actually feel better already.I do have a history of seizure disorder but have been seizure free 11 years and take phenobarbitol, just in case. An EEG was done first and it continued to show NORMAL.

PROS: None
CONS: DIZZYNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a 25 year old male who was perscribed to this for anxiety and seritonin reasons. 20mg.once a day. The first day I took this, It made me extremely tired to the point I had to sit down allllll day and yawn to no end. (which was tolerable). However, the 2nd day, was a completly different story. I got VERY dizzy and started shaking uncontrollably and just in general was NOT enjoying myself. I had to call emergancy services because the side effects wer just too sever and I wanted it out of my system a.s.a.p. Emergancy services than told me there was nothing I could do except go to the E.R. which I wanted to avoid because of cost. But the symptons wer getting even more severe to the point I could not belive! and I ended up having a panic attack! it was the scariest 5-10 min of my life! It doesnt end there. I took zanax to calm me down which worked but made me tired, and I ended up sleeping 16 hours. and 3 days later (now) I am STILL getting dizzy every now and then. Be carefull with this drug!
