Pros: Has helped mild depression in the past
Cons: Causes pretty bad anxiety and is not monitored by a doctor

I have used St. John's Wort periodically when I am not on medication. I have found that medication is much more effective.

Pros: Minimal side effects; mood improvement; not likely to trigger mania; reasonable price
Cons: Not quality controlled; not for severely depressed

I started taking St. John's Wort recently (and he was probably glad to get rid of it. What a name for an herb!). I wasn't at all depressed and I still feel fine, but I figured the change of seasons might affect my mood. This might not be a good idea in combination with my psych meds, but I'm not going to worry about it. It certainly hasn't triggered anything--as prescription antidepressants can do--and, if anything, I feel slightly more relaxed, although not more energetic.

Pros: can give some extra energy
Cons: not enought information

Sometimes I drink this tea while at work to help improve concentration. I think it is better than drinking coffee, although I donīt know exactly what happens to the brain physiologically.

Pros: nothing notable
Cons: upset stomach

I waited a fair amount of time for SJW to begin working, though i never did notice a differance. I stopped after two months when I gave up on it.

Pros: No prescription needed
Cons: Not strong enough for me

Maybe it is better than nothing, which is what I had at the time! But it wasn't strong enough to get me out of the pit. I had to get real drugs.

Pros: Fast improvement in mood, not detrimental to health
Cons: mild indigestion, effects may lessen after time.

I have used SJW many times over the last few years. It has few side-effects, gave me a slight improvement in mood after a couple of hours. It doesn't affect sleep, libido or appetite, no weight gain. Probably more suited to mild depression, can be purchased easily without prescription (UK) and need not be too expensive. Don't mix with other a/d's such as SSRi's. Can cause a bit of indigestion, best taken with food.

Pros: good for people with intolerance / sensitivity to medications
Cons: need to come off psych meds in order to try it

I haven't tried it either but I've heard some very good reports about it. Yeah, don't combine it with other psych meds without checking with your doctor because they have found st. john's wort affects the same neurotransmitters... It can be useful for people who are very sensitive / intolerant to pharmaceuticals. If you do take it you need quite a hefty dosage to achieve optimal effects and it is important to buy it in a form where it is quality controlled so that there is some guarantee that the active ingredient is present in the same amount in each capsule you take.

Pros: Generally mild, low side effects, good for menstrual cramps
Cons: Possible adulteration - unregulated in the US, it's an MAOI

Although St. John's Wort did little for my depression, it may act as a smooth-muscle antispasmodic, which would make it good for menstrual cramps & possibly back spasms. Most people do not realize that SJW is an MAOI & therefore should not be used in combination w/SSRI's (like Prozac) or tricyclic antidepressants. Even though SJW is mild, the dietary suggestions for people using MAOI's should be followed.
