Default Vistaril for Anxiety

One doc prescribed me xanax for anxiety, which I was hesitant to take at first. But I didn't exactly feel comfortable with that doc and found a new one that is completely against xanax, which is understandable because of its addictive qualities. At any rate, in addition to increasing my Trileptal, he gave me a prescription for Vistaril for the anxiety on an add needed bases until I become more stable. Has anyone tried this? Any side effects?

I have never tried in on it's own....the ER always put it in with the demoral shots for my migraine headaches to keep me from getting sick from the demoral.......

It's basically a first-generation antihistimine that is used to relieve the itching caused by allergies and to control the nausea and vomiting caused by various conditions, including motion sickness. It is also used for anxiety and to treat the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

Sort of a catch all med that's used for lots of different things

I have used it. It is pretty mild, but still helpful. My pdoc said that there is a small group of patients who experience extreme sedation on it, but if you aren't one of those (don't know until you try) you should be okay and have few side effects.

Best,
EJ

Vistaril is technically an allergy medicine, but gets used for all sorts of things. I was given it to counteract nausea side effects from another medication. In fact, I have a bottle of it I keep in my medicine cabinet for those times I get a stomach bug.

It will make you tired probably. Actually does a good job of knocking me out so I hate taking it unless being knocked out is preferable to being awake and incredibly sick to my stomach.

I have had it prescribed. There weren't any side effects, except that it was mildly sedating, which is part of the point. It works fast, and wears of quickly and cleanly. It's not at all habit-forming, I don't think.. I think of course there are exceptions to that, but very uncommon.

I would compare it to a very mild Ativan dose. I really didn't like it myself, but I was already taking Klonopin, so it was sort of redundant. Trying it would not be harmful, I think.

So the doc told me that I could take two at night (50mg) for sleep since I have been having trouble falling and staying asleep lately. When I realized before it was too late that I wasn't falling asleep anytime soon, I went ahead and took them as directed. I was knocked out within 20 minutes! I had a hard time getting out of bed this morning, but they did the job! I've been feeling ok lately, so we'll see how just one pill works if I have anxiety issues during the day. Thanks for the advice everyone!

p.s- still a little groggy though....

One (25mg?) might not be enough. I usually take 3-4 25mg at a time. Pdoc said as long as I stay under 200mg per day, it's okay.

Best,
EJ
