Default Antidepressants that don't cause weight gain?

Hi,
I am hopefully going to see a psychiatrist soon for help from my chronic anxiety/panic (SEVERE) and depression. My depression is not extremely bad but I want to ask about an antidepressant because I can have some bad times with depression (but again, it's a walk in the park compared to my anxiety).

I have always had a tendancy to gain weight EASILY and have to work to keep it off. Most antidepressants cause weight gain. I have enough trouble with weight gain now, and can only imagine if I was on a drug that contributed to that. I am 5'9 and weigh about 187lbs right now . I am an almost 18 y/o male. I would probably gain more if I let myself. I feel horrible and look bad when I am fat...165 is my ideal weight given my frame size and height. Trying to get back in to exercising, etc. Could some of you all help me with maybe some anti-depressants to ask about/look in to that don't cause weight gain, or at least much? I know my mom takes Celexa now b/c Paxil made her gain extreme, unhealthy amounts of weight, as did another antidepressant like Paxil (I don't remember the name). She is at a healthy weight now and says it works well.

I can't take something that causes weight gain. I gain weight too easily and don't want drugs making me bigger. It makes my self-esteem worse and makes me feel bad overall, not to mention it's not healthy. Is it logical to tell a doctor you don't want something because of weight gain? I would maybe take something if nothing else worked. But definately want to try something first that is the best when it comes to avoiding weight gain.

Thanks!

Weight gain is an important concern. Definitely tell your doctor.

Paxil is one of the worst SSRIs for facilitating weight gain. Of course, everyone is different.

SSRIs that I have heard are "weight neutral": Celexa, Lexapro

Wellbutrin (Buproprion) is another AD that also does not typically cause weight gain. Wellbutrin is not an SSRI.

Good luck.

zoloft doesn't cause weight gain. Neither does effexor xr , effexor actually helped me lose weight. but may not have that affect on everyone. Anti depressants can sometimes help ppl to lose weight if the drug increases the persons motivation to want to exercise. IMO

I can tell you which ones not to take that caused weight gain for me... Paxil and Remeron... but everyone is different so it really depends on the person and the amount (mgs) they are taking. The meds that really do the most weight gain are the anti-psychotics (like zyprexa, risperadol, seroquel, etc)... SSRI's and other anti depressants in comparison to the anti psychotic meds do not cause nearly as much weight gain (at least from my experience). Hope that helps and good luck!

I have gained a lot of weight on Effexor RX, I asked my doctor about it because the psychiatrist had told me I would lose, but apparently it doesnt have the same effect on everyone. Great for my mood though...
Good luck finding the right one for you.

Prozac is another good one for not causing weight gain.
